20 TEHAMA - THE MAGAZINE, May 2022 students and features online, 8-week classes and year-round instruction; a Sacramento State University program provides a way to earn a Bachelors in Early Childhood Education; and the third option, via Future Educators Support (FES) program through San Diego State University, which helps students work toward their CLAD and BCLAD credential attainment. "This type of collective local effort just reminds me why I am so proud to be from Tehama County," said Mendenhall. "By pulling together innovative approaches like Desserts and Degrees, we have already begun to make an impact. After attending the March event, one talented bilingual paraprofessional at Gerber School enrolled in the FES program via San Diego State and will be on his way to earning a Bilingual Teaching Credential while working in the TK classroom next Fall." Just a county away, Chico State University's School of Education also offers strong pathways to teaching credentials. They offer a Masters of Arts in Education through the CLASS program. And they have worked to increase the number of student teacher placements in Tehama County. The RISE program (precursor to CLASS) placed residents at Corning High School for 5 years. Currently, 4 CLASS students are working as residents at Red Bluff High School and several more are placed at elementary schools in Corning. These graduates often go on to accept jobs in the region. "There are careers in education right here," said Garcia. "And a lot of solid ways to get started now."
