Branch on Tuesday, May 3, and the re- sult was a 12-0 Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) loss at the hands of Gibson South- ern in a game that the Char- gers did not play poorly. But on this day, the Gibson South- ern Baseball Team was a "ti- tan" for which the young Char- ger team had no answer. Gibson Southern, playing what might have been its best game of the year, greeted the Chargers with a home run on the first pitch of the bottom half of the first inning, and it only got worse for PCHS from there. The Titans scored another six runs and batted around, sending 10 hitters to the plate in to take a very quick 7-0 lead over the visitors. The hosts went down one, two, three in the bottom of the second inning, but in the last half of the third frame, Gib- son Southern added a pair of runs to go up 9 -0 after three innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the eventual winners put three more runs across the plate to take a 12-0 advan- tage over the Chargers. Junior Jackson Stucky opened the top of the fifth in- ning with a sharp single to left field on an 0 -1 pitch for Pike Central's third hit of the day, but the Titans got the next three Chargers out one, two, three to end the inning and the game. "We did not play poorly," said Charger Mentor Dustin Powell after the contest, "but we hit the ball within range of their fielders most of the game. "We committed just one er- ror in the game, and it came late." "On the other hand, it seemed as if Gibson Southern hit the ball just out of reach of our fielders several times. "They were in the right place at the right time when we were at the plate, and when they were at bat, they hit the ball in just the right place, al- so. "I still think we are going to be a factor in the sectional. We have only lost a couple of games because of poor play. "We have gotten better, and our guys have kept their heads up, which I believe will give us a shot at winning sev- eral of these games down the stretch and make us a team to be reckoned with at tour- nament time." Stucky, junior Jagar Dent, and freshman Albert White- head each knocked base hits for Pike Central, all singles, to give the Chargers three hits in the game, while senior Harley May and junior Isaac Burdette both worked the Titan pitch- ers for a walk to give the Char- gers five base runners in the contest. The loss left Pike Central at 2-11 on the year, including 0 -6 in conference play, while the victory put Gibson South- ern at 11-4 overall and 4-4 in league action. The Chargers were sched- uled to tangle with Tecumseh at Pike Central last Thursday, then host Evansville Bosse on Saturday morning, before hosting Tell City on Tuesday evening. The Chargers travel to Washington on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. PAC outing with the host Hatchets, and on Fri- day, Vincennes Lincoln will come calling at Pike Central at 6 p.m. Pike Central will close out this busy week by hosting Oakland City's Wood Memo- rial at noon on Saturday. Pike Central junior Jagar Dent (13) smacked a 3-2 pitch for a single to left field to open the second inning in last Tuesday's Pocket Athletic Conference (PAC) outing at Gibson Southern. Dent went one for two in the fray in a losing effort, as the Titans toppled the Chargers 12-0 2 col. x 3" (actual size) Way to go, (grad's name)!
