Vernon By Andy Heuring A dramatic two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth inning delivered a 2-1 win over Mt. Vernon for the Chargers soft- ball team on Saturday. Macey Stilwell was down to her last strike in the sixth in- ning when she hit a fly ball to right field that dropped and al- lowed Delany Welch to score what would be the winning run. "This win was the high- light of the week for sure, coming out of the week with three wins and two confer- ence wins, we were really hap- py with," said Charger Coach Dustin Traylor. "The Mt. Vernon game was a big game for us, one of those games where you learn what the team is made of. We had opportunities, but just couldn't push a run across. I misjudged a ball to the out- field and cost us a run mid- way through the game. The girls never wavered, stayed upbeat, kept playing good de- fense, and stayed in the game. The bottom of the sixth, down a run, we never stopped work- ing," said Traylor. Pike Central had trailed since the first inning when Mt. Vernon's leadoff hitter singled. She advanced to sec- ond base on a fielder's choice for the second out. A two-out walk put runners on first and second. A ground ball by Bai- ley Cox got through the Char- ger infield and scored Hannah West. Charger pitcher Chloe Williams settled in and shut out the Wildcats for the next six innings allowing six hits, with three strikeouts and three walks. Pike Central offense was held in check as well, really only threatening to score in the fourth inning when Lexi Onyett led off with a walk and Avery Hunt was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second. Welch hit a grounder to third base and was thrown out at first, but Jaidyn Gogel, who was a courtesy runner for Onyett, went to third with one out. But the inning ended abruptly when Madelyn Fis- cus lined out to the left fielder who then threw to third base to get Gogel out. The Chargers finally broke through in sixth inning. Aly- na Sharp went down swing- ing. Onyett grounded out to third base. Avery Hunt was hit by a pitch. Welch hit a two strike single to the left side, putting runners on first and second. Fiscus then hit the first pitch on a rope to center field, driving in Hunt and moving Welch to third base. It also tied the game at 1-1. Stilwell was behind in the count 1-2 when she fouled off a pitch. Then facing a two- strike count for the second pitch ripped a shot to right field to score Welch, giving Pike Central a 2-1 lead for the first time in the game. "Macey Stilwell hitting a single to right field to drive in Delaney for the winning run was huge. Just goes to show, when your number is called it's time to step up and Mac- ey certainly did that for us," said Coach Traylor. Williams then shut down Mt. Vernon in the seventh and Pike Central walked away with a 2-1 win.
