Michelle Burkhart and her son Max, a Pike Central student, talked about their experiences at Riley when Max was a patient there. Dance Marathon for Riley raises record $23,384.20 Pike Central set a new record for fundraising at its 8th Dance Mara- thon for Riley. Saturday was the cul- mination of a year long series of fund- raisers that totaled $23,384.20. Coordinator Abigail Vinnedge said the fundraising events include: the Powder Puff football game before Fall Homecoming, two car washes, the Haunted Hallways which was open to the public, penny wars be- tween our homerooms, hosted a mini-marathon for elementary stu- dents which was similar to the Dance Marathon but shorter, a Sweetheart semi-formal dance and a dodge- ball tourney for the middle school. We also have several Miracle Min- utes throughout the year at athletic events where the students have one minute to collect as many donations as possible from the spectators. It was the first time in three years the event had been held in person and raised $2,000 more than any pre- vious event. More than 100 students gathered to take part in the seven hour event in which students learned line dancing from members of the Indiana Univer- sity Dance team. Students had nu- merous dances sessions along with lots of fun and games and presenta- tions about Riley Hospital. Vinnedge said the event is spon- sored by Pike Central's Riley Exec- utive Board, which is made up of Stu- dent Government officers. Students also made cards for patients at Riley during their seven hours in the gym Saturday. Students celebrated the new record with a giant sign displaying the total raised for Riley.
