Poplar Street, Petersburg In March, Stanford University soccer goal- ie Katie Meyer took her own life. In April, Uni- versity of Wisconsin track star Sarah Shulze took her life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns there is a mental health crisis among young people. A recent survey revealed than 4 in 10 teens reported they feel "persistently sad or hopeless." Shockingly, 1 in 5 say they have contemplat- ed suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people. Why are young people tak- ing their lives in record numbers? A letter written by Clayton Steele, a 17-year- old high school student, highlights this cri- sis. He wrote it to the editor of the Colorado Springs Post Independent. "I am a 17-year-old student in Glenwood Springs, and I am hoping to shine some light on mental health in Glen- wood and the surrounding valley. Almost ev- ery single student I know is suicidal and men- tally ill, and most friends I have, including me, have had at least one suicide attempt. My close friend had an attempt last night that sent him to the hospital. There are no outlets in Glen- wood for mentally ill teens and the mentally ill in general. There has been a very big in- crease in mental health driven crimes recently, too, which I feel needs to be addressed. Clay- ton Steele." I suspect what he is writing could apply to Anytown USA. May is Mental Health awareness month. Mental illness and suicide are still taboo sub- jects for many people. Even fewer people want to talk about suicide. Being diagnosed or la- beled mentally ill is a stigma most people want Another Sunday to Sunday seven days have passed and we have embarked upon another week to either mess up or make full use of. Whatever comes from your new week either make it work or learn from it. Last Sunday was Mother's Day and being so I must tell you that our Lord God Almighty has commanded we pay honor to our parents. Have you ever known someone who was mean and cared very little for authority or authori- ty figures? At their demise did people care? Did you re- member them for long? The answer bad people occupy very little of your memory while a real nice person is re- membered often for his or her contributions to this world. Well to start off some Christian should have witnessed to this person and giv- en them an opportunity to seek forgiveness. Hopefully that happened. A child with respect and honor for their par- ents brings people to say great things about their family and they are remembered as some- one who can be counted on. As parents we are to rear our children to respect others. Respect is remembered far longer than bad manners and guess what, people give your folks much credit for their training of you. Aretha Franklin said it best, what we need is R E S P E C T and with it our life will be far less tramatic. "Les Feldick taught that Isaiah 53:2 doesn't mean the Lord Jesus was ugly, but that there was nothing in Him that would attract the Jews to Him as their King and Messiah. What do you say? " I never thought about it that way, but Les is right! Isaiah wrote: "…when we shall see Him, there is no beau- ty that we should desire Him." In the context, we find a description of the Lord just a few verses earlier that has to be tak- en into consideration to determine what the prophet meant: "…His visage was so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men" (Isaiah 52:14). This is a picture of the Lord after the scourg- ing they gave Him just before nailing Him to the cross. This somber image of what He en- dured to pay for our sins is what believers have in mind when the world observes "Good Fri- day". But that means Isaiah was saying there was nothing in Him that the "people" of Isra- el (53:8) would desire in a king. They reject- ed Him because they were looking for more of a "champion on a white horse who will The church page is made possible by the following firms and businesses: Amber Manor Care Center Petersburg — 812-354-3001 Benner & Co. "Be kind and compassionate to one another forgiving each other, just as in Christ God for- gave you" (Ephesians 4:32). It can be the hardest thing to do, forgive when someone has wronged you or a family member. Sometimes its the last thing we want to do, and almost seems impossible. It would be impossible without the Lord's help and strength. We have to remem- ber he forgave and keeps on forgiving us when we certain- ly don't deserve it. The hurt may not leave im- mediately, but because of God's command we must take that first step and eventually, with God's help, the feelings of hurt and resentment will leave. We know we must forgive, be- cause God first forgave us. We have so many in need of God's healing touch and we thank him for his love and peace. We invite you to join us. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 A wonderful time of Bi- ble Study is taking place on Thursday, each week at 10 :30 a.m., at Randy's Americana Café. We are studying from the Gospel of John. John's gos- pel account is a glimpse into some of the personal moments and events in the life and min- istry of Jesus. All of the Peters- burg community is invited. Life is good. That's not to suggest that we don't have times of struggle, pain, sor- row, even despair, loneliness and on and on… By faith, we face each day believing God loves us, takes care of our needs, and most of all, gives us hope for eternal life through His Son Jesus. We trust Him. It was the apostle Paul who wrote these words: II Timothy 1:12; "…I know whom I have believed, and am persuad- ed that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day." In Galatians chapter five you find that Joy is the second part of the fruit of the Spirit. "Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in the God of my sal- vation" (Habakkuk 3:18). Someone has put similar words in a song, "Joy" he said, "is the flag which is flown from the Castle of the heart when the King is in residence there." I know, how true. Because He lives.
