Indiana's Historic Pathways wins national award Indiana's Historic Pathways received the 2020 Byway Organization Award for Innovation presented by the Nation- al Scenic Byway Foundation on May 4, at the Heartland Conference in Leav- enworth, Kansas. Glenda Ferguson ac- cepted the award on behalf of the Buffalo Trace Working Group, consisting of vol- unteers coordinated by the Hoosier Na- tional Forest, who contributed over 800 hours while creating the Buffalo Trace Education Boxes. Over 70 boxes were distributed, free of charge, to fourth grade teachers and oth- er public facilities in the eight-county area of the Buffalo Trace Trail — Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Crawford, Orange, Dubois, Pike and Knox. With assistance from an Indi- ana Humanities Grant and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the volun- teers included items related to the bison, student activities and other objects relat- ed to the bison migration route. The Foundation commented how the boxes "sparked the enthusiasm of fourth grade students for the local Indiana his- toric route, while having some furry fun in the process." During the Conference, Ferguson displayed the education box and spoke to more than 80 attendees from over 20 states, including Washing- ton, D.C. Thinking I was just a couple days late for taco Tuesday, I let it go. Later in the evening, I was perusing Facebook and re- alized I had completely spaced on Cinco de Mayo. Given the fact that my hubby loves Mexican food, I was surprised he didn't remember. But I had served him beef tips in mushroom gravy, so I think that he forgave me for my forgetfulness pretty quickly. Nevertheless, I was still craving Mexican and I am usually in charge of what we eat, so Saturday became Fajita Night. So, here's the recipe I used for my family. I had sides of sour cream, salsa, shredded cheese and extra limes, because we like to dress ours up a little. I hope your family will like this recipe as much as mine. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 1/2 c. plus 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil • 1/4 c. lime juice, from about 3 limes • 2 tsp. cumin • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes • 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 bell peppers, thinly sliced • 1 large onion, thinly sliced • Tortillas, for serving DIRECTIONS 1. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 ⁄ 2 cup oil, lime juice, cumin, and red pepper flakes. Season chicken with salt and pepper, then add to bowl and toss to coat. Let mari- nate in the fridge at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours. 2. When ready to cook, heat remaining tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add chicken and cook until golden and cooked through, 8 minutes per side. Let rest 10 minutes, then slice into strips. 3. Add bell peppers and onion to skillet and cook until soft, 5 minutes. Add chicken and toss until combined. Serve with tortillas. Winslow Patoka River is almost full with the rain we had, less than an inch in our area, on two different nights. We had lightening strikes that lit up the room and thunder that shook the house. The White River and the Wabash Riv- er is close to flood stage by Thursday, May 5. Our temps have been in the 70s, which was warm enough to open a win- dow. The nights started off cool, but rose to about 55. The fire flies are out in 'Brownstown' part of Winslow, called 'Barb's Park,' and we saw more than ten. The squirrels are also out, and we saw them on two of the corner trees. Birds are singing and play- ing in the trees; I saw cardinals, blue jays, robins and a few that I didn't know what they were called, but I love to see them. Mom's white flag has a bud; the rose bushes have leaves with small buds; the lilac bush has some fragrant smells; the dogwood tree has more leaves; and there are trees in the woods in bloom with flow- ers. The 'helicopter' seeds are about to end their spinning to the ground. Some fields still have colors of yellow, and one field is already plowed. We have a tick called the Lone Star, which has a white dot on the back of the female tick. Charlie Barr, Norm and me have had a tick bite from this kind of tick, with-in the Winslow. It is in many areas around here; this one gives you a small bump that sometimes itches. I guess they are fine, but I don't like them in our yards and even while sitting on the porch. Pike County Primary has gone and you know now if your per- son won. We voted at the Winslow Old Gym, where we saw several stars as they voted, and as they worked to help have that voting expe- rience. We talked to Debra and Vernon. Our next time to see everyone again is in November, where we all will vote in three town council members and a clerk treasury. The Open Fun Horse Show, on April 30, was a partly cloudy day, the temp was 75, with strong wind gusts. The horses and their riders were many more than the last show. Several events with different age groups for riders- from youth, to teen, to adult. If you haven't seen this kind of horse-rider event, then this is a great event to experience. We, the Winslow Lions Club, sold out of food again, but we had enough to last the whole after - noon. We had fun, as we severed many stars from around the Pike County area. George and Deby go to Jacari's sports events, and the other day Jacari placed third in the high jump, and he also jumped his height of 6'1". Congrats Jac- ari. In our area there is a spot where, it is now called 'Barb's Park,' there are lots of trees of all shapes and sizes with dif- ferent colors of green leaves, small roll- ing hills, and a stream to catch the rain water that comes down the hills. This is the ditch Norm has opened up from the briers that he cut out. Some trees have limbs that hang over and gives the spot with a swing, cover- like a hide out. There is also a piece of 'trash art.' This area has always looked like a park, if you sit in a chair and enjoy the birds. The UPS truck drove up and there was a package for me. I opened the box and inside was a solar moon wind chime, and the six moons have 'man in the moon' on them. The card reads: "Happy Mother's Day, from Laura." The wind chime is outside getting some sun to glow at night. I really love this solar moon wind chime, most of my solar decorations are on a stake or has a hanger, but I also love objects/chimes that can hang from the tree limbs. The lights are about to dim for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends. Slow down and see all the wonders in your area. Always smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. My So Called Millennial Life By Stephanie Hayes A word from Mickey Mouse, who is spiralling H-h-hey everybody! It's me, Mickey Mouse! Say, you want to come inside my club- house? Well, alright! Oh, boy! Let's have some fun! Let's pretend nothing bad is going on, OK, everybody? I don't like to complain, be- cause if you can dream it, you can do it! But I've had a rough couple of weeks, hoo-hoo! Not so swell, to be honest! My attorney, professor Ludwig Von Drake, has advised me not to speak, so I will be careful, because I'm just a mouse in pants! Or are these shorts? Capris? Pantaloons? They are high-waisted with hollow, unsee- ing eyeballs, which sums up how I feel these days! To make the clubhouse appear, we have to say the magic words together. Come on, everyone! Meeska Mooska Mickey Mouse! Meeska Mooska Mick- ey Mouse! Did that create a special taxing dis- trict? No? Oh, boy. Maybe we can try again, a little louder! M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O- U-S -E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G-I-S -F-I-N-E. Now, I don't know too much about government, except that Donald Duck has shown what Minnie calls "autocrat- ic tendencies" and that Goofy is what she calls a "sycophant, which one could argue is more dangerous than the au- tocrat." All I know is, a lot of people in full- length pants have met in colorless boardrooms! They are threatening each other with money this mouse made them, kids! And I am now caught in a Mouseke-revenge plot! I've got ears! It's time for cheers! Do you know how many ears people wear every day? With sequins and bridal veils and rainbows and, for some reason, Yoda? Those ears come out of my head, and no one is even talking about me! Minnie said, "It's not about you," and I felt kind of hurt! She said we are "trapped in a performative culture war with real consequences." I told her that all our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them, and she said, "only with aggressive gerryman- dering." Later, Daisy told me she saw Minnie with... shhh... a cigarette. She's full of beans! Hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog, I'm feeling down, I'm kinda lost! Is it normal to be... gee, I don't know, a lit- tle hopeless? Not about any one spe- cific thing, but, like, everything? Like there's a gray cloud over the Mag- ic Kingdom and I don't have a yellow poncho? Like I'm missing the energy to even wave at the Move It! Shake It! Mouseke-Dance It! Street Party? Gosh, Minnie was mean! She said I was a "melancholic narcissist cling- ing to a rosy past that doesn't exist anymore," hee-hee! She said, "Florida is setting petty prec- edents devoid of checks and balances." She said I'm living in a "liminal space with only nostalgia as an anchor." Then she started wearing pantsuits! But best friends stick togeth- er! We can fix this, everyone! Let's go get our Mouseke-tools! Mouseke-hey, Mouseke-hi, Mouseke-ho, Mouseke-bond rating agency! Mouseke-fire protec- tion and Mouseke-wastewater services! Mouseke-constitutional law! Oh, no, boys and girls. It's all a bit too much for your old pal Mickey. I'm going to play with Pluto because he makes me feel something, by golly. Dogs might be the last thing we have in common any- more! Minnie said dogs "trigger oxy- contin" and that it's a "Band-Aid for my problems" and wow, I really need Min- nie to give it a rest! It's time to say goodbye! I'm going to turn off all the lights and sleep face- down! Hot dog, hot dog, the problem's solved! Now toodle-oo, I'll see you soon! (Minnie said, "in court.")
