She was born June 11, 1942 in Petersburg, to Albert and Beatrice ( Wolven) Woods. She attended Petersburg High School and went on to work for GE and Kimball Elec- tronics for many years. She was a proud member of the Ayrshire Valley General Bap- tist Church. She and her hus- band of 61 years, Carl, were married June 18, 1960. She is survived by her hus- band, Carl Willis; son, Darrin (Angie) Willis; daughter, Car- la Hayden; grandchildren, Va- nessa Hayden, Cassie (Cory) Scraper, Olivia (Daniel) Rob- bins, and Hunter (Destiny) Willis; 11 great-grandchil- dren; and sister, Geraldine Ooley. She is preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Chris- topher Hayden; and brothers, Drexel Woods and Donald Sanderson. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. EST on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Harris Funeral Home, in Petersburg, Pastor Frank Coleman will be offici- ating. Burial will follow at Wal- nut Hills Cemetery, in Peters- burg. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. Nelson, 65, of Winslow, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. She was born on April 22, 1957, in Oakland City, to the late Henry and Menta ( Weid- man) Nelson. She was a member of the Eagles Club 2646, the Legion Post 115 and The Lion's Club. She spent much of her time as a volunteer at the Winslow Community Center alongside her best friend, Frieda Bolin. She is survived by her chil- dren, Toby (Priscilla) Nelson, Stacey (Rachel Kelly) Hill and Joseph Vickers; her grandchil- dren, A.J. Snipes, Meagan Snipes, Kaylee Hill, Ashley Nelson, Chelsea Proctor and Coby Nelson; 11 great-grand- children; her siblings, Hen- ry Nelson, Linda Nelson, Tammie English, Paula Nel- son, Tim Nelson and Kristy Schwinghammer. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her sib- lings, Carol Parkhill, Cowboy Nelson and Menetta Strobel. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Simple Cremation Evans- ville is entrusted with her care. DORIS J. BLACKBURN Doris Jean Blackburn, 84, passed away at 11:30 p.m. on May 4, 2022, at Golden Living Center in Petersburg. She was born on Novem- ber 9, 1937, in Pike County, to James A. and Mildred L. (Mos- by) Garland. She married Paul Blackburn on April 7, 1956, and he preceded her in death on April 15, 2004. She was a member of Frank- lin Heights Christian Church for many years and was very active in many facets of the church. She began her work- ing career at Bridgeport Brass and then Blackburn Builders. She then started her career with First Federal Bank, where she retired from there as an Assistant Vice President. A f- ter her retirement she worked part time at Vincennes Com- munity School Corporation as an Aide. She also worked along side her husband's Construc- tion Business doing adminis- trative work. She also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren, and drinking coffee with her sis- ter-in-law, Rosalie Blackburn. Survivors include her chil- dren, Tammy ( J.R.) Cox, of Vincennes and Scott Black- burn, of Ft. Branch; her sib- lings, Margaret Townley, of Petersburg, Tim (Nancy) Garland, of Zionsville, Janet (Mike) Vaughn, of Pikeville; sister-in-laws, Christine Gar- land, Nelda Garland, Rosalie Blackburn and Sharon Black- burn; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul Blackburn; and her brothers, Jimmy, Paul Dean, Lowell and Roger Garland. BLACK John Cassius Black, 81, passed from this earth on May 6, 2022, at Good Samari- tan Hospital in Vincennes. He was born in Vincennes on October 29, 1940, the first child of Sheldon and Georgia (Bennett) Black. He was a rich character with a gentle spirit and a generous heart. He was full of humor- ous stories, local folklore and family tales. He was known as Brother John, Johnny Cash, Black John, Uncle John, Mr. Black and JC. A lifelong educator, he loved teaching English, constantly pursuing his love of language while teaching his family new vocabulary words and encour- aging us to think critically. A graduate of Monroe City High School in 1959, he attended Vincennes University's Asso- ciate degree teacher program. At the age of 20, in 1961, he moved from Monroe City to Chicago Heights to begin his teaching career. He complet- ed his education while work- ing full time and graduated from Indiana University with undergraduate and graduate degrees. He also taught edu- cation courses in a communi- ty college in Chicago and be- came a principal before he was 30 years old. Pursuing a doctorate in Linguistics, he studied urban and rural language patterns of children, moving to Appa- lachia to work with school chil- dren in Harlan County, Ken- tucky. He also taught in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Lexing- ton, Kentucky, before return- ing to his roots in Knox Coun- ty. He spent his last 30 years at Pike Central Middle-High School teaching English and was a legend among his stu- dents. He especially enjoyed teaching Walt Whitman's "O Captain, My Captain" and we know he will 'rise up to hear the bells' on his new journey and his renewed life in heaven. He was a civil rights activist, a champion for the disenfran- chised, and was an environ- mentalist before it was a cli- che. A proficient pianist who played hymns for his mother, he could play any song he had heard once. He was happiest when canoeing, hiking, riding horses, and amongst his peo- ple telling stories and reflect- ing on life. To know him was to love him. He was a member of Sa- cred Heart Catholic Church and supported the United Ne- gro College Fund and Save the Children programs. He was a member of the ISTA, NEA, and Sons of the American Rev- olution. Survivors include his sib- lings, Marlis (DJ) Day, Steve (Och Jong) Black, and Becky (Brent) Stuckey; his nieces and nephews: Stephanie ( Joe) Day-Keller, Travis (There- sa) Day, Andrew Black, Zach (Annie) Stuckey, Katie Taylor (Paul), and Maggie Corbett (Patrick); and 12 great nieces and nephews. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 13, at Harris Funeral Home, in Petersburg. Burial at Mt. Zion Cemetery will immediately follow the service. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 12. WILLIAMS Catherine Marie Williams, 93, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2022. She was the wid- ow of the Rev. Herschel Wil- liams whom she married No- vember 25, 1944. He passed away April 13, 2000. She was born October 4, 1928, to the late Forrest and Laura (Hoehn) Dixon, in Posey County, but grew up in Alford. She was a housewife, moth- er, grandmother, and a faith- ful worker in the United Meth- odist Churches, as she served with her husband. Her life was devoted to her family, her faith, and her many friends. They retired from the min- istry June of 1987 and moved back to Knox County near Oaktown. She took an active part in the ministry with her husband, filling the pulpit as needed when he was unable to do so. She was also a life- time member and very active in the Ladies U.M.W. and oth- er activities of the churches they served. Her favorite bi- ble verse was the 23rd Psalm, it was a blessing to her when she was down and needed lift- ed up. She enjoyed cooking for family get togethers, crochet- ing, sewing, quilting, baking, working in her flowers, and shopping with her daughter, Vickie. Surviving are her children; Vickie (Rex) Chattin, of Oak- town and Linda (Bill) Dortoz, of Niles, Mich.; nine grand- children; and she was also blessed with 27 great-grand- children and one great-great- grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her son, Gary Herschel Williams; brothers, Forrest Dixon Jr. and Frank Dixon; grandsons, Rex "Jason" Chattin and Rog- er Williams.
