Poplar Street, Petersburg See SECTIONAL on 2 See GOLF on 3 See BASEBALL on 2 Baseball and softball sectional draws announced By Andy Heuring The baseball and softball sec- tional draws were announced Sun- day night. The big change for softball is Gibson Southern will host the sectional, and they move back down to 3A for the first time in five years. Last year Pike Central won the Washington Sectional, beating host Washington 10 -0 in the final game. This year the Lady Char- gers have been moved to the Gib- son Southern Sectional. The first game of the sectional will be Vincennes Lincoln against Princeton at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 23. Pike Central will play Washing- ton at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 24 on the second night of the sectional. Gibson Southern drew a bye in the first round and will play the winner of Monday's Vincennes Lincoln/Princeton winner at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, following the Pike Central game. The winners of Tuesday's games will play at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. "Sectional draw couldn't have turned out any better for us. We will continue take it one game at a time as we move forward," said Pike Central Coach Dustin Tray- lor. He added, "We have a lot of tough games coming up from now until the sectional, so it's import- ant to not get ahead of ourselves, and just focus on our next game." Pike Central (10 -3) and Gibson Southern (16 -4) appear to be on a collision course. Gibson Southern has played the last five years in 4A because of their past success in the state tournament. They have won four of the last five years in the 4A sectional. This season, Pike Central has beaten all the other teams in the sectional except Gibson South- ern. They beat Princeton 14-3 on April 19, Washington 15 -1 on April 27 and Vincennes 9 -4 on Monday. They are scheduled to play Gibson Southern on Satur- day, May 14. CHARGER BASEBALL DRAWS WASHINGTON IN SECTIONAL Pike Central's baseball team drew Washington in the Prince- ton Sectional. They will open the Washington sectional on Wednesday, May 25. Vincennes Lincoln plays Prince- ton in game 2. Then the winners of those two games will play in game three. Gibson Southern and Fausnaugh Female Athlete of the Year at Marian Ellie Fausnaugh, daughter of Don and Carla Fausnaugh, of Pe- tersburg, was named the Female Athlete of the Year, at Marion University Ancilla Athletics, during a recent sports banquet at the university. Ellie Fausnaugh had two very big roles athletically this year. She played on both the Women's Soccer team and Women's Bas- ketball teams. Fausnaugh was a starter for every soccer game and with that, she had a total of 270 saves in one season. While playing on the Women's Basketball team, Fausnaugh started more than half of their games, and had a huge impact on the court. Alongside her athletic accomplishments, she is on the Deans List and is also a Resident Assistant at the campus dorms. Lady Chargers defeat Hatchets 15-1 By Andy Heuring Pike Central's softball team pounded out 14 hits on the way to a 15 -1 win over the Washington Hatch- ets on Wednesday night. Four players had two or more RBIs during the melee, and senior pitcher Sophie Carnahan kept the Hatchets' bats at bay spreading five hits over five innings while allowing only one earned run and striking out three. "Sophie pitched a great game, moved the ball all over," said Char- ger Coach Dustin Traylor. "Our defense was solid. The run they did score we almost had her out but missed the tag at home. Lexie re- covered quickly and gunned down the runner trying to advance to 3rd base to end the inning," said Traylor. Tessa Vinnedge was 2 for 2 with three RBIs, Karley Kavanaugh was 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Carnahan, Macey Stillwell, Avery Hunt and Lex- ie Onyett each had two RBIs. Pike Central jumped on Wash- ington in the first inning, as lead-off Brailey Mills reached on an error. Mills stole second, and Kavanaugh hit a line drive double to center field that scored Mills. Kavanaugh went to third on a passed ball, and Carnahan reached on an error that scored Kavanaugh, making it 2-0. Stillwell was inserted as a courtesy runner for Carnahan and was thrown out trying to steal second. Sharp kept the rally going with a single to center field. Avery Hunt hit a fly ball to right field that allowed Sharp to advance to third. Hunt then stole second, and On- yett hit a hard ground ball and reached on an error that allowed Sharp to score. Delaney Welch then singled to load the bases. Vinnedge then got two of her three RBIs, when her single scored both Onyett and Hunt. Mills' single rounded out the Char- ger scoring in the first inning, bring- ing Welch home for a 6 -0 lead. Carnahan was able to quell any counter rally in the bottom of the first inning, but gave up one run in the bottom of the second. A four-run third inning put the game out of reach. Welch led off the inning with a grounder and reached first base on an error. Vinnedge then cracked a double to left field, bring- ing Welch home. With one out, Mills doubled to left field to put runners at first and third. A line drive by Kavanaugh got past the right fielder, and scored both Vinnedge and Mills for a 9 -1 lead. Carnahan drove a ball to deep cen- ter field, allowing Kavanaugh to tag up and go home, making it 10 -1. Onyett added to the lead in the top of the fourth, with a home run over the center field fence. It was her first of the season. Pike Central would score four more in the top of the fifth inning. J. Gogle singled to open the in- ning. Two batters later, Lakin Sorgi- us singled, putting runners at first and second. Carnahan hit a fly ball and reached on an error, loading the bases. Stillwell hit a line shot to center that scored Sorgius and Gogel. With Hunt at the plate, Carnahan went to third base on a wild pitch, and Stillwell went to second. Hunt then singled, driving both home to round out the Chargers' 15 runs. Carnahan issued a walk to start the bottom of the fifth, then struck out the next two batters, before get- ting a grounder back to the pitching mound for the final out. Girls' tennis beat Washington Catholic By Andy Heuring Pike Central girls tennis team picked up their third win of the sea- son with 4-1 victory over Washing- ton Catholic, on Wednesday night. Jaime Sallee beat Chloe Garland 6 -4, 6 -2, at number one singles to get things rolling for the Chargers. Charger Gabby Collins, at num- ber three singles, won a tiebreak- er in the first set to take it 7-6, then won the second set 6 -3 over Karen Kanapra. Ella McGuire dropped her match at number two singles to Jennifer Lopez 6 -1, 6 -1. The Chargers swept both doubles matches as Reagan Craig and Shel- by Keeker won 6 -, 6 -2 over Molly Brown and Mya Cline. At number two doubles, the pair- ing Lilian Mann and Eibhlin Teague beat Maggie Lee and Stephanie Montoya 6 -3 and 6 -1. In junior varsity matches, Pike Central Ashlyn Kirk beat Maritza Villagrew 6 -4. Kirk they played Ce- lested Sangtiago and won 6 -0. Chargers golf score 177 vs. Rangers By Andy Heuring As the weather warms up, Pike Central's golf scores are going down. The Chargers shot their best team score of the year with a 177 at home against Forest Park. "That is our best team score in a couple years," said Charger Coach Jarrod Gideon. The Rangers shot a team score of 165, which is a 41.5 average to win the match, but the Chargers are continuing to show improvement. Pike Central's Arri McDonald was the medalist again, with a 38. It is the third straight match the soph- omore has broken 40. He started the match at two under, as he bird- ied the first two holes. "I just had a couple of bad chips," said McDon- ald about his bogies on holes three, four, seven and eight. In all he had two birdies, three pars and four bo- gies. Peyton Howald, who is playing golf for the first time this season shot a 41. It is his best score of the year. He birdie the par three fifth and stood at even par, before he slipped into a bogey mode on the last four holes. "Howald has a world of talent, when he puts things together it is impressive to watch. He is really making some big strides with his knowledge of the game and course management," Gideon. Tyler Craig and Nolan Nelson both shot 48s for the Chargers. Craig birdied the second hole. Lucas Taylor had a 49, and Arie O'Neal a 57 for the varsity players, in Thursday's match. Nathan Snyder playing JV, shot a 44 for the Chargers. Pike Cen- tral had six players break 50 in the match. Pike Central baseball falls to Princeton, 2-1 By Mike Sandifar Pike Central junior Kendric Sor- gius threw just 76 pitches, compared to 114 pitches by three Princeton hurlers. He did not walk a batter, while the Tiger mound crew walked four Chargers. He allowed just six hits, the same number as the trio of visiting pitchers; and his Char- ger teammates gave Sorgius great defensive support, not committing an error in the seven-inning contest. But that was still not good enough on this day, as Pike Central lost a heartbreaker to visiting Princeton 2-1 in high school baseball play at Charger Field Saturday afternoon. Neither team scored in the open- ing two innings of the tightly played game, but the visitors scored a run in both the top of the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 advan- tage over the Chargers. Both teams were scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings, and Sorgius faced just three Tiger batters in the top of the seventh frame, getting the first out on a ground ball to Jagar Dent at third base, then got the sec- ond out on a pop up to senior Devin Carlisle at second base. Sorgius took care of the final Ti- ger hitter on his own, striking out the third Princeton performer to step into the batter's box in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Albert Whitehead sin- gled to center field on a 1-0 pitch to put a runner on first with no outs. The Tiger pitcher got the next Charger on strikes, but not before Whitehead stole second to put a run- ner in scoring position for Pike Cen- Alyna Sharp takes a big cut at a pitch during Pike Central's 15-1 win over Washington last Wednesday. Sharp was 1 for 3 in the game.
