In the wild black- berry brambles and century old devils darn needles lies the patriarch of the Dedman family, in Pike County, buried on what was once his land. "This is a small family cem- etery nestled up against the spoil banks," Brittany Nance, said. "It was spared during coal mining in the area. It is next to the old charity farm property. You can see the old road that ran just a few feet from the cemetery. There are some old yucca plants planted in the square, that is the graveyard. Right now, there are five graves. There used to be an old stone for Samuel Dedman, but may- be it is buried. We (the fam- ily) of Sergeant Samuel Ded- man, having been trying to gain access to Dedman Cem- etery for the past two years. The Winslow Legion actual- ly found the cemetery and on April 2, did a flag dedication ceremony to honor Sergeant Samuel Dedman. My family descends from his daughter, Sarah Fields Dedman, who married Walter Jerrell (my fifth great-grandfather)." Dedman not only fought in the Revolutionary War, but was also a signer of the Vir- ginia Declaration of Inde- pendence. Nance, Dedman's sixth great-granddaughter, was able to join the Daugh- ters of the American Revolu- tion, under his name. Dedman was born in 1747 and died in 1836 at 86 years old, accord- ing to Nance. "We had such a hard time gaining access to the ceme- tery because it had not been cared for at all, for a very long amount of time, and, of course, the land had been sold and changed hands so many times, it was impossi- ble to get a hold of anyone to even know the exact location," Nance said. "It was extremely grown up. I can't even explain the severity of it." Nance and her family had to do some research to find out who is responsible for the cemetery. "The goal is to be able to access it easily with- out having to hike spoil banks and jump creeks and ditches," Nance said. "Dedman Ceme- tery is a state registered cem- etery, so by law, it is required to be accessible. It is also the Winslow Trustee's responsi- bility to ensure that happens. As the family, we should have the right to be able to pay re- spects to honor Sergeant Sam- uel Dedman and everything he put on the line to help win our freedoms that we enjoy to this day. We hope to continue to move this forward to gain actual access to care for and maintain the cemetery." Members of the Winslow American Legion Post 115 recently found the cemetery of Revolutionary War Sergeant Samuel Dedman and held a flag dedication cere- mony in Winslow. Petersburg Elementary State Qualifying Robotics Teams head to VEXIQ Worlds Championship By Sherri Sebella Petersburg Elementary School (PES) is very proud to announce that nine of it's stu- dents who are a part of the Ro- botics team at the school, that qualified for the Indianapolis State Competition, are now headed to the VEXIQ Worlds Championship in Dallas, Tex- as, on May 10 -12. "I, along with my co-coach- es, Susannah Julian and my son, Parker Knust, are so proud of these amazing stu- dents for their hard work and dedication to robotics," Terra Knust, second grade teacher and one of the coaches for the Robotics team, said. "Some of the students have been com- ing to practices daily after school for about a month. We began this in October, so go- ing from October to May is a long time to dedicate to one activity. It's not like a sport where they participate for a couple of months and move on to something else. This takes some serious dedica- tion. There is definitely some sweat and tears involved in what we do. They experience all the emotions." Knust has been involved with many extracurriculars in her 23 years of teaching, but in her eyes, VEX Robotics is by far the most rewarding and challenging activity that she has been a part of. "It is a high honor to make it to State and if you make it to Worlds, well that is the ex- treme honor," Knust said. Team 12109D PES Engi- neers of Indiana, which is made up of Gavin Mounts, Korbin Trowbridge and Sophi Wilson, placed eighth in robot skills (this is the combined score of driving skills and programming skills) and 10th place teamwork, so they dou- ble qualify for VEX Worlds. This team is currently ranked eighth out of 587 teams in In- diana, who have competed in skills, and 120 out of 3,904 teams in the world who have competed in skills. Team 12109B PES Circuit Jokers, which is made up of Grayson Schultheis, Avelyn Knepp, Corbin Knepp, and Daxyn Yon, is ranked 44 out of 587 teams in Indiana. Team 12109A PES Atomic, made up of Keaton Stafford and Josha- wa Blackburn, is ranked 53 in Indiana. These top rankings earned the teams their quali- fication for the VEXIQ Worlds Championship also. "Robotics has become in- creasingly popular, and In- diana currently has at least one team in every county," Knust said. "There weren't many teams in our area who went to state. Cedar Crest and Tell City each had one team at state, but besides that, the teams were mostly Indianapo- lis and North of that. The Tell City team that went to state al- so qualified for Worlds so they are really the only other team in our area that will be going." To these third grade stu- dents, making it to Worlds is probably one of the most excit- ing times in these kids' lives, according to Knust. "They are over the moon about this and will remember it forever," Knust said. "The PES robotics kids deserve this honor and I hope that we are able to raise enough money to be able to go to the Worlds Championship in Dallas. Our registration alone will cost $ 3600, and of course there are travel and ho- tel costs on top of that. Infor- mation will be going out to the public soon on how people can help make these kids' dreams of going to Worlds come true." "We aren't to our goal yet with fundraising, but we have done well and are so thankful for the support of the community and those beyond our local community," Terra Knust, one of the PES Robotics coaches, said. "Worlds is next week and we have eight students who will be going. The kids are very excited about competing at the world level and are going to be great representatives of Pike County."
