B-4 Wednesday, May 4, 2022 The Press-Dispatch Lady Chargers beat Vincennes 9-4 By Andy Heuring The Lady Chargers soft- ball team beat Vincennes 9 -4 on Monday for their fifth con- secutive win. A fter spotting Vincennes a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Chargers scored nine unanswered runs . "We continue to put a lot of hits and runs on the board," said Charger coach Dustin Traylor. With one out in the first, Karley Kavanaugh hit a dou- ble. Alayna Sharp hit a sacri- fice fly to left field, advancing Kavanaugh to third with two outs. Sophie Carnahan fol- lowed with a double to drive in Kavanaugh. Lexie Onyett drew a five pitch walk. Avery Hunt then hit an 0 - 2 pitch for a single to center field, scoring Carnahan, and evening the score at 2-2. Delany Welch then hit a hard grounder through the left side of the infield to score Onyett, and give the Chargers a 3-2. Williams allowed Vin- cennes first batter a single in the top of the second inning. She then sat them down in or- der. Pike Central added a run in the second, as Madelyn Fis- cus got on base with a walk to start the inning. Mills ground- ed out, Kavanaugh walked, and then Sharp hit a single to score Fiscus for a 3-2 lead. Pike Central never looked back. In the third inning they scored two, as Hunt led off with a single. Welch hit a grounder to shortstop, who threw to first to get Welch, but Hunt advanced to second safely. Vinnedge doubled on a lined drive to center, advanc- ing Welch to third. Fiscus sin- gled to bring in Welch, and send Vinnedge to third base. Welch stole second base to get into scoring position. Mills then hit a hard grounder through the right side of the infield, scoring Vinnedge, and sending Fiscus to third base, making it 6 -2. The Chargers added three more in the fourth inning. The first two came via a 0 -1 pitch Avery Hunt jacked over the centerfield fence. It brought in Onyett, who reached on an error. Their fi- nal run of the game came af- ter Welch got a one out walk, and Fiscus singled with two outs to bring Welch in, mak- ing it 9 -2. Vincennes attempted a late rally. With one out in the sev- enth, Kaithlyn Helderman walked, and Johna Bottoms followed with grounder to third base that was fielded, and thrown to second for a force out. Bradie Turpin then hit a double down the third baseline. Then Chloe Cardi- nal hit a grounder. A throwing error on the play allowed, then allowed two runs to score. Sophie Carnahan then got a strikeout to end the game, and give the Chargers their 10th win of the season against three loses. Lady Raiders no match for Pike Central's 'hot bats' By Andy Heuring Pike Central's hot bats pounced on Southridge and never looked back Thursday, as they beat the Raider 12-5. Charger pitcher Chloe Wil- liams struck out 13 and al- lowed one earned run on 11 hits over six innings. Pike Central five run, firth inning, started after Williams had sat down the Raiders in order. Lead-off batter Brailey Mills was hit by a pitch. She stole second and Karley Kava- naugh bunted safely, advanc- ing Mills to third. Williams then blasted double to center- field, scoring both Mills and Kavanaugh. Sophie Carnahan popped up and Alyna Sharp reached on an error, advancing the runner to third base. Lexie Onyett then doubled to left field to drive in two runs. Avery Hunt pushed Onyett home with a line drive to cen- terfield and the Chargers led 5 -0 after one inning. Williams again dispatched the Raider hitters. Pike Central looked to go down in order in the second, but with two outs, Williams lined a 3-1 pitch to center for a double. Carnahan in her second at bat scorched a line drive double to score Lakin Sorgius, who was a courtesy runner for Williams, and Pike Central led 6 -0. They tacked on another three in the third inning, as Lexie Onyett led off the in- ning by tagging an 0 -1 pitch for her second home run of the season, and a 7-0 lead. It forced a Southridge pitching change. Avery Hunt kept it going with a single to right field. Del- aney Welch then hit a ground- er through the left side. Tes- sa Vinnedge struck out, and Mills flew out to the left field, brining up Kavanaugh with two outs. She hit a 1-0 pitch into right field, for a triple to bring in both Hunt and Welch, for a 9 -0 lead. Southridge mounted a short lived rally in the top of the fourth inning. An error allowed Mikah Goeppner to reach base they then got four hits to bring in four runs mak- ing it 9 -4 before, Williams got a ground out to end the in- ning. Southridge added a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth, when Avah Montgomery and Goeppner both singled to start the inning. A two-out double by Loren Fleck scored Montgomery making it 9 -5. But the Chargers answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs. Vinnedge led off with a fly- out. Mills hit an 0 -1 pitch to left field for a single. She then stole second, and Kavanaugh hit an 0 -1 pitch to right field for a single, scoring Mills for a 10 -5 lead. Williams then drilled a single to left field, scoring Kavanaugh. Carnah- an would make it a 12-5 lead with a single, to score Sorgi- us who was running for Wil- liams. Williams struck out two in each the sixth and seventh in- nings to close out the Raiders. Pike Central track team places second in Pioneer Relays By Andy Heuring Pike Central's boys track placed second in the Pioneer Relays on Monday and the girls placed fifth as Xavery Weisman set a school record in the 1600. Three Charger boys won individual events in the five- team meet. Ethan Mann set a personal record, clearing 6' in the high jump to take first place. Peyton Chanley broke five minutes in the 1600, running a 4:54 to win. Teammate Dal- las Reutepohler ran a person- al best 5:15.8 to place fifth in the race. Braden Howald cleared 11' to win the pole vault with teammate Griffin Boyd in sec- ond. Pike Central's 4x200 and 4x800 relay teams placed second in the meet. They al- so placed fourth in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The 4x400 relay team of Izik Jackson, Gabe Hinton, Aidan Collins and Ethan Mann ran a per- sonal best 4:13.28. Sam Coleman threw a ca- reer best 36' in the shot put to place fifth. The meet was won by Boon- ville with 102 points. Pike Cen- tral was second with 52 points. The other teams were Tecum- seh 44, Evansville Christian 40 and Evansville Day School 10. WEISMAN SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN THE 1600 Freshman sensation Xav- ery Weisman set a school re- cord in the 1600 as she ran a 5:25.67. It broke Brittany Craney's record of 5:25.70 set in 2004. Despite the re- cord, Weisman didn't win the event. She placed second be- hind Boonville's Gresham who ran a 5:20. Pike Central senior Quin- lan Teague placed fourth in the 1600. Weisman also set a person- al best in the pole vault where she cleared 8'6" to win the event for Pike Central. Ruby Sallee placed fourth in the pole vault. Erika Vinnedge placed second in both the shot put and discus for the Chargers. It took her best throw of the season, 35'4" to secure sec- ond place. Oxley of Tecum- seh threw 35'9" to win. Boonville won the meet with 73 points.
