B-2 Wednesday, April 27, 2022 The Press-Dispatch Chargers beat Southridge By Andy Heuring Pike Central's golf team shot their best score of the season Tuesday night to beat Southridge 189 -202. Pike Central's Arri Mc- Donald was medalist with a 39. He started the round hit- ting a tee shot out of bounds and managed to limit the damage to a double bogey, then bogied hole 2. But he turned it around and made par the next seven holes to finish with his career low in competition at Prides Creek. Peyton Howald carded a 49, but it could have been much better had he not made 10 on the last hole. Arie O'Neal, who just re- cently picked up golf clubs in the last year, shot a 50. He didn't make par on a sin- gle hole, but avoided any big numbers. Cobey McKinney and Ty- ler Craig both shot 51s. McK- inney parred both of the par three holes. Craig made par on the hole 7. Nathan Snyder, playing on the junior varsity squad, shot a 48, carding two pars along the way. Other scores for the Char- gers were Lucas Taylor at 52 and Caden Fausnaugh at 54. "I think we are really close to shooting some solid team scores. They will get there. They put in so much time, good things will happen for them," said Charger Coach Jarrod Gideon. He added, "Once they set- tle into being more confident and comfortable with match pressure I think our scores will really improve. We get closer every match." Southridge's low individu- al score was a 47. Lady Charger tennis falls 5-0 to Southridge By Andy Heuring Pike Central's girls tennis team fell 5 -0 to a senior-laden Southridge team on Wednes- day night. Four of South- ridge's top seven players are seniors. Pike Central's team has no seniors. At number one singles Ella McGuire lost 6 -0, 6 -0, Jamie Sallee was beaten by Olivia Lopez 6 -3, 6 -2, while Gabby Collins at number three sin- gles lost to Kate Durcholz 6 - 3, 6 -0. In the doubles match- es, Regan Craig and Shelby Keeker at number one dou- bles lost 6 -3, 6 -2, and Lilian Mann and Eibhlin Teague at number two doubles lost 6 - 4, 6 -0. In the junior varsity match- es. Ashly Kirk lost to South- ridge's Tabbi Hoing 8 -3 and Ashlyn Kirk of Pike Central beat Abi Byrd 8 -4. Middle School tennis defeats Lady Trojans By Andy Heuring PIke Central's Middle School tennis beat Wood Me- morial 4-1 on Monday night. Alyssa McCutchan at number one singles won 8 - 2. Amelia Adams at number two singles won 8 -3 and Kyn- dall McCutchen at number three singles fell 8 -7. The number one singles team of Emily McGillem and Calleigh Wibbler won 8 -6, while the number two team of Ellie Readle and Elliee Ar- nold won 8 -0. In reserve matches, Jay- lan Bailey and Avelyn Knepp fell 6 -0, Callie Craig and Jen- na Harris lost 6 -2, while An- na O'Brien and the team of Alivia Weitkamp and Addie Wibbeler all fell 6 -0. Boys' track places fourth in Southridge Invite By Andy Heuring Pike Central's boys team placed fourth in the South- ridge Boy's Track Invitation- al last on Thursday. Braden Howald had his personal best jump in the pole vault to pick up the Chargers' only win on the night. Howald cleared 12'6". Griffin Boyd placed fifth in the event clearing 11'6". Howald also placed fifth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 18.53. Wyatt Frasure placed sec- ond in the 100 for the Char- gers with a time of 11.88 and was fourth in the 200 at 24.46. Ethan Mann cleared 5'4" to place fourth in high jump and Dallas Reutepohler placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:21.53. Others who placed for the Chargers were the 4x100 relay team of Mann, Boyd, Howald and Frasure. They ran a 47.99. The 4x800 re- lay team of Tyler DeCoursey, Dane Gladish, Dallas Reute- pohler and Peyton Cheney placed sixth in a time of 10 :17.71. Heritage Hills won the meet with 194. The others were 2) Princeton 159, 3) North Posey 60, 4) Pike Cen- tral 37, 6) Southridge and 7) Wood Memorial 4. Lady Chargers' strong start squashes Pioneers By Andy Heuring Pike Central jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then snuffed out a two-run rally in the sev- enth for a 3-2 win over Boon- ville, Monday night. "We were in control all game then it got tight at the end there," said Charger Coach Dustin Traylor. Pike Central burst on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, when Avery Hunt led off the inning by jumping on a 2-1 pitch for a home run over the center- field fence. It was her first of the season. They added a second run in the third inning, when Brailey Mills scored. She led off the second with a walk, then stole second base. Kar- ley Kavanaugh lined out to first base. Chloe Williams grounded out to the short- stop, but it allowed Mills to go to third base with two outs. Sophie Carnahan's single scored Mills from third, and the Chargers had a 2-0 lead. The game was scoreless over the next three innings until the top of the seventh. Lexie Onyett singled to left field to lead off the sev- enth. Mills followed suit and the Chargers had runners at first and second with no outs. Kavanaugh bunted safely and the Chargers had bases loaded with no outs. Williams then singled to bring Mills home, and give Williams the cushion she needed to get through the seventh inning. Williams got Boonville's lead off in the seventh to ground to second base, but then walked Lauren Gen- try, who stole second before the Pioneer's Ashton Pryor was hit by a pitch. A passed ball allowed Gentry to score, and Pryor to go to third base. Campbell then singled to bring Pryor home, making it 3-2 with one out. Williams then struck out Peyton Pryor and got Chavez to fly out to end the game. "Chloe pitched a great game, defense behind her was outstanding. With a sol- id team like Boonville runs are gonna be hard to come by at times and we were able to score a run in three innings. We had opportunities to score more but just couldn't get that timely hit to break the game open," said Traylor. Mya Hudson powers her way over a hurdle during the 100 hurdles Saturday. Boyd and Smith win at Princeton Invitational Pike Central's Grant Boyd won the pole vault and Jaco- by Smith the 400 in the Princ- eton Middle School Track In- vitational on Saturday as Pike Central's boys placed fifth in the eight team meet and girls placed seventh. Both Boyd and Smith had big days for the Chargers. Boyd won the pole vault with a height of 9'6". In the long jump he placed third with a leap of 17'1". He also was fourth in the 200 in a time of 25.15. Smith won the 400 in a time of 1:00.68 and placed fourth in the 100 in a time of 12.6. Smith and Boyd also teamed with Awstyn Luff and Quintin McCormick to place third in the 4x100 relay in a time of 53.19. Other place winners for the Chargers included Carson Wiscaver who placed sixth in the 300 hurdles in a time of 55.49 and Justus Edrington, who was sixth in the discus with a throw of 80'1". The Charger 4x400 relay team placed fifth in 4:49. In the girls meet, Lady Charger Emily Riker placed in two events. She was fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 6:23.35. She also placed fifth in the 800 meter run in a time of 2:54.14 Sadie Willis placed fifth in the 400 in a time of 1:10.75 and Katelyn Neal was eighth in the 200 in 30.60.
