Awards will be given in both 2-dimensional and 3-di- mensional art categories. The deadline for applications is September 8th. Awards will be presented at the Event Reception Friday, September 17. The public is invited to attend. Celebration Juror this year will be Connie Bostic, a na- tive of Rutherford County. Bostic holds a B.A. in art from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and a Mas- ters degree in studio art from Western Carolina University. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internation- ally, and pieces of hers are owned by the Asheville Art Museum and the State of North Carolina. From 1990 to 2000, she operated the ‘zone one’ contemporary gallery in Asheville. For many years Bostic has served on the board of Directors of the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center. Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ I know that no one wants to think about it since we are in the swelter- ing summer, but deer season is just around the corner. South Carolina’s season actually begins in the middle of August. I love to hunt, but I just can’t put myself through those conditions for a deer….unless it is a Pope and Young of course. But I would absolutely have to know that he is coming to my stand. It seems that deer season has always been tied to the cooler temperatures. During the years when the deer were scarce, hunting was almost always associated with Thanksgiving. And back then, the week of Thanksgiving would always bring with it a little snow. My neck of the woods has changed since then. The deer are more plenti- ful but the snow is not. And with the abundance of deer, there has come the abundance of days to hunt as well. I have adapted seemingly without no- tice. It seems that most of my life has fol- lowed this pattern. I have not set out to adapt, but have slowly, almost subcon- sciously, changed to accommodate my new environment. And for the most part, I have kept in step without a fuss. But I’m still not hunting deer in August.
