This spring, the spotlight is on Rutherford Outdoor Coalition, a local conservation network doing awesome work in Rutherford County. Jess Kerr, their executive director, is a WNC native who got her start in the fi eld working on the trails team at the Park. Rutherford Outdoor Coalition (ROC) is a small but mighty nonprofi t in Rutherford County run by folks who are passionate about expanding and enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities and environmental stewardship in Rutherford County and surrounding areas. To achieve their mission, the Coalition hosts monthly volunteer workdays on local trails to ensure that the trails you love are safe, beautiful and navigable. Volunteers spend countless hours responding to down trees and erosion issues, as well as promoting and educating the public about local trail use. Many of the trails that the Coalition has adopted are in the Gorge! The Coalition is also instrumental in protecting the Broad River through a River Stewards program that regularly monitors water quality and organizes river clean-up initiatives. ROC also offers environmental education programming and guided outdoor recreation opportunities to area youth and adults to cultivate environmental stewardship. An extensive list of monthly guided outdoor recreation opportunities like kayaking, camping, hiking, birding, running, cycling and more can be found on their website. Events are also posted on Facebook and published in newsletters. With a single staff person supporting the Coalition, ROC relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors to advance their mission.
