The number one doubles team of Reagan Craig and Shelby Keeker won 6 -4, 6 -4 over Grace Lueder and Lily Tenbarge. The number two doubles team of Alaina Johnson and Lily Mann dropped a close three-set match to Alison Gansman and Grace Ten- barge. The Charger pair won the first set 6 -4, but then fell in a tiebreaker 7-6 in the sec- ond set. Then in a 10 -point tiebreaker they lost 10 -7 the deciding set. Jaime Sallee dropped her number two singles match 6 - 2, 6 -3 to Lily Denning and El- la McGuire fell 6 -1, 6 -1 to Mt. Vernon's Lauren Boeke. Pike Central forfeited at number three singles. In a junior varsity match the Chargers' Eiblin Teague beat Reilly Schelhorn 6 -5. Ava Hudson receired the Kiwanis Mental At- titude Award. Chloe Willis was named Top Performer. PC CHEER AWARDS BANQUET Burdette at the plate, putting a runner in scoring position with just one out. Whitehead took third when Burdette grounded out for the second out of the in- ning, with Garcia coming to the plate. Garcia hit a sharp single to left on the 3-2 pitch, and Whitehead raced home for the sixth Charger run of the afternoon to give the visitors a 6 -1 cushion. Sorgius again worked the Lion pitcher for a walk, giv- ing the Chargers runners on first and second with one out, but the Lion pitching and de- fense tightened up and Pike Central could not score an- other run in the inning to give the visitors a 6 -1 advan- tage after five and one-half innings of play. In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the "bottom" fell out for the Chargers, as the hosts plated five runs in their half of the inning to tie the score at 6 -6. Pike Central could not score in the top of the sev- enth frame to set up the dra- matic scenario for Nonte in the bottom of the seventh. Sorguis started on the mound for Pike Central, and the crafty right-hander struck out 11 Lion bats- men over the six innings he worked. He gave up six hits. The Chargers had six hits in the game to go along with seven walks and a hit bats- man, giving PCHS 14 bas- erunners in the encounter. Garcia banged out three hits in four at bats with a pair of runs batted in (RBIs) for the Chargers, while May (dou- ble), Whitehead, and Bur- dette each came up with one hit in the game. Sorguis got on base three times via a walk. The loss left Pike Central at 0 -1 on the early 2022 sea- son, while the win gave Loo- gootee at 1-0 record after one game. No April Fools Joke for the Chargers. It was a heart- breaking loss for a team that has worked so hard in the off-season and the pre-sea- son to prepare for the 2022 diamond campaign. But remember the Yogi Berra quote, "It ain't over 'til it's over" goes both ways! pinch runner and stole sec- ond. Fiscus advanced her with a single, and Fulcher scored on a grounder to third by Mills. Sophie Carnahan came for Williams in the seventh and closed out the Spartans. "The first couple of in- nings we were still being a bit over aggressive at the plate and out on their front foot swinging, but then they all seemed to settle in and really started making solid contact. They were all hitting the ball sharply and putting the ball in play," said Coach Traylor. "Home runs by Alyna and Chloe just capped off a solid night of hitting for us. Any- time you put up 12 runs you should be in great position to win ballgames," said Traylor. The Lady Chargers are 1- 1 on the season. HEARTBREAK Continued from page 1 S. KNOX Continued from page 1 Charger bats hot as they pound out 13 runs By Andy Heuring The Lady Charger softball team bat- tered their opponent for double digit runs for a second consecutive game Monday night beating North Daviess 13-1. "We pounded out 19 hits and scored 13 runs. It could have been more, but we lined into two double plays that ended in- nings with runners on base, had those been out of reach of the defenders more runs would have scored," said Charger Coach Dustin Traylor of the Chargers' win. Chloe Williams struck out 12 batters and held North Daviess to one run. She helped her cause with a lead-off homer, her second of the year, in the fifth inning. It gave the Chargers a 4-0 lead. They scored three more in that inning. "We are hitting the ball hard, line drives and the bomb Chloe hits over the fence," said Traylor. Pike Central scored two runs in the sec- ond inning as Sophie Carnahan opened the inning with a single. Lexie Onyett made it to first on an error, and then stole second base to get into scoring position. Alyna Sharp obliged, hitting a single to drive in both Carnahan and Onyett. In the third inning Karley Kavanaugh led off with a single. Williams grounded out, then Carnahan reached on a fielders choice with Williams being forced out, but Kavanaugh advanced to third. Onyett then drove the ball to centerfield, to drive in Kavanaugh for the Chargers 3-0 lead. Pike Central pushed the lead to 8 -0 in the fifth inning, when the Chargers sent nine batter to the plate. Williams led off with a homerun. Carnahan flew out to centerfield, Onyett grounded out to short- stop for Pike Central's second out. Sharp hit a single, she was driven in by Hunt's single, who was driven in by Welch's dou- ble. Briley Mills then hit a single to bring Welch home. While Pike Central was putting up those eight runs in the first five innings, Williams mowing down the North Da- viess batters, striking out 12 and not al- lowing more than four batters an inning other than the first inning; when she struck out three, including the last with runners in scoring position. North Daviess finally scored in the sixth inning, when Hadley Parisien reached on a fielder's choice. Parisien then stole second and third and scored on a drive to right field by Lily Graber. But Tessa Vinnedge "threw a rope" from right field to the plate, cutting down Ka- sey Freed at the plate for the third out. "Our defense was solid, no errors. And right fielder Tessa Vinnedge's rope to home plate to get an out at home was huge for us," said Traylor. Pike Central added one in the top of the sixth and four more in the bottom of the seventh. Welch started the seventh with a single, followed by a double by Fiscus. Mills flew out to center, before Kavana- ugh grounder back to the pitcher moved the runners. Williams singled, then Carnahan dou- bled, driving in Williams, before Lakin Sorgius' single brought Carnahan home for the Chargers 13th run. "We are starting to be more comfort- able at the plate, gaining confidence, wait- ing on the pitch, swinging at good pitch- es, keeping their weight back and making solid contact. Everything we have been preaching since the Jasper game. We had a couple base running miscues that we will get squared away before we face Loo- gootee Thursday night, weather permit- ting," said Traylor. "Chloe had great command of her pitches and really dominated their bat- ters and kept them off balance," said Tray- lor. Williams gave up 5 hits and 1 run over 7 innings. "This is a big week for us, away games all week. Loogootee Thursday night, Boonville Southern Slam starting Fri- day night where we will play Evansville Memorial; and then we will play Boon- ville and Daviess County, Ky on Saturday. They are all quality teams," said Traylor. Gabby Col- lins hits a back- hand during her match Mon- day night with Tecumseh. Col- lins beat Haylee Sheets 6-2, 6-1 as Pike Central won 5-0.
