Chloe Williams cruised through the first three innings. She mowed down the Spartans as she struck out two batters in each of the first two innings, be- fore striking out the side in the third. "Chloe was dialed in Tues- day night in the pitching rubber. She had the South Knox hitters off-balanced all night. We had a couple of throwing errors in the fourth and sixth that lead to their runs," said Charger Coach Dustin Traylor. In the fourth inning South Knox's first two runners MaKen- zie Johnson and Maittilynn Ash- ley both reached on throwing er- rors. Johnson stole second and then came home on the error. Lily Culp's drive to left field brought home Ashley. Williams struck out Rayce Cates to end the Spartans' rally. Pike Central added two more runs in the top of the fifth when Sharp hit one over the fence, for a two run homer scoring On- yett. Sharp had three runs on the night. Number one singles Ella McGuire started run off with a 6 -3, 7-6 win over Alexia Carlisle. Jamie Sallee kept it going in a hard fought three set match at number two sin- gles. A fter dropping the opening set 7-6, Sallee found something and put Brittney Wahl away 6 -2, 6 -2 in the final two sets. "Jaime's match was a particularly hard fought match by the simple fact that it lasted just 10 minutes shy of three hours," said Beck. Gabby Collins at number three singles had no trouble in her first match of the season. She rolled over Haylee Sheets 6 - 2, 6 -1. Collins missed the season open- er last week. At number one singles Reagan Craig and Shelby Keeker stayed undefeated with a 6 -3, 6 -4 win over Lucianne Funk- houser and Lilian Hess. CHARGERS FALL TO PRINCETON IN COLD SEASON OPENER By Andy Heuring Pike Central's boys and girls track both dropped their season opening track meet to Princeton on a cold and windy Tuesday night. The girls, de- spite having limited numbers, put up some impressive times winning six events. Princeton won the girls meet 91- 41, but freshman Xavery Weisman was the star of the meet, as she won all four of her events beating defend- ing sectional champions in two of the running events, and a sectional run- ner-up in the third event. Princeton's distance runners were formidable last year led by the Meade twins; Haley and Heidi, as sophomore, were first and second in the both the 1600 and 3200. Weisman in her first event the 1600 run, pulled in behind Meade for the first two laps, and then early on the third lap passed and pulled way for a time of 5:32, 15 seconds ahead of Hei- di. Weisman then lined up in the 800 and posted a 2:38, which was six sec- onds faster than last year's sectional runner-up Lexi Smith, who finished in 2:44. Weisman's 3200 performance mir- rored her 1600 run. She positioned herself behind Meade sister Haley for the first few laps, and then took off pulling out to a 12 second lead over Meade for a time of 11:54. Meade fin- ished in second at 12:06 and Charger senior Quilan Teague turned in a sol- id 12:16 for third place. Weisman also won the pole vault with a height of 7'6", Ruby Salled placed second for the Chargers at 6'. "Xavery had a really good meet. She also won the pole vault. We are ex- pecting her to do some good things for us," said Charger Coach Chris Kramer. Senior Morgan Anderson won the 300 hurdles in a time of 56.56, beat- ing out Princeton's Audrey Beadles in second with a time of 57.32. In the 110 hurdles, Anderson was second with a time of 18.62. Erika Vinnedge was the other win- ner for the Chargers, she won the shot put with a toss of 31'3. She was second in the discus, with a throw of 88'1". Maddon Williams won the dis- cus with a toss of 97'4". The discus distances were affected by a strong wind straight into the face of the dis- cus throwers. "Erika wasn't far off her best from last year in shot put and with the wind it was kind of hard to get any really good throws for anybody, but we feel she will no doubt do well in discus on a normal day," said Kramer Makynna Satterfield was the other Charger to place. She was third in the long jump with a leap of 9'9.5". BOYS FALL 105-27 TO PRINCETON Pike Central's boys fell to a strong Princeton team in their season opener 105 -27, as Princeton won 15 of the 16 events. Payton Chanley was the lone Charger winner on the boys side. He brought home the Chargers lone win by running a blistering sub 11 minute time in the 3200 on a cold windy night. Chargers fall to Loogootee in 7-6 heartbreaker By Mike Sandifar April Fools Day is supposed to be about playing jokes, but it was no joke here Friday for the Pike Central Baseball team, as the Chargers dropped a sea- son-opening heartbreaker to host Loogootee, 7-6. The Chargers were in com- mand throughout the first five innings of the non-conference outing, taking what appeared to be a commanding 6 -1 lead into the bottom of the sixth frame, but once again, the fa- mous Yogi Berra quote, "It ain't over 'til it's over" proved to be very much prolific, as the host Lions jumped on Pike Central for five runs in the bot- tom of the sixth inning to tie the score at 6 -6. Loogootee held the Char- gers scoreless in the top half of the seventh inning to keep the score at 6 -6 with the Lions coming to the plate in the bot- tom half of the inning. Junior pitcher Isaac Bur- dette struck out Loogootee freshman Landon Mathies for the first out of the inning in the bottom of the seventh, but se- nior Luke Nonte hammered a one-out, 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field for a walk- off home run to give the hosts a 7-6 victory over Pike Central. The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in- ning when senior Harley May popped a double to left field to open the inning, then stole third and scored from third on a passed ball. In the bottom of the third frame, the Lions pushed one run across to knot the score at 1-1. Neither team could tag the pitchers for a run in the fourth inning, but in the top of the fifth, the Chargers plated four runs to take a 5 -1 lead. Senior Evan Conder opened the top of the fifth frame with a walk, and after a strike- out by the next Charger batter, fresh- man Albert Whitehead was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. The next Pike Central bat- ter was Burdette, and the ju- nior hit a hard ground ball to the third baseman who stepped on the bag for the force out of Conder heading to third. That left runners on first and second, with two outs in the inning, with sophomore Kannon Garcia coming to the plate for the Chargers. Garcia slapped a single to right field, and Whitehead raced home to put Pike Cen- tral up 2-1. Burdette advanced to third on the base knock. That brought junior Kendric Sorgius to the plate, and Sorgi- us worked the Loogootee hurl- er for a free pass to load the bases with two outs. That brought junior Jagar Dent to the plate, like Sorguis, Dent worked the Lion pitcher for a walk to score Burdette and give PCHS a 3-1 advan- tage. May was the next hitter, and the veteran also came away with a free pass to first, scor- ing Garcia to push the Char- ger lead to 4-1. Sophomore Zach Miller was the next Pike Central hitter to step to the plate, and he also worked the Loogootee pitch- er for a walk to score Sorguis and give the Chargers a 5 -1 margin. Conder, who started the in- ning with a walk, was the next PCHS batter, struck out to end the "bat around" inning for the Chargers. Pike Central held the Lions scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth to keep the score at 5 - 1, in favor of the Chargers af- ter five full innings of baseball. In the top of the sixth, Whitehead singled to right field with one out, then took second on a wild pitch with Lady Charger Tennis defeats Tecumseh 5-0 Charger Jamie Sallee hits a forehand during her match Monday night with Brittney Wahl of Te- cumseh.
