"It's the closest to flying most people can get," says
Joy Ferguson, marketing and brand manager for Sonoma
Zipline Adventures in Occidental.
The Forest Flight Tour consists of seven ziplines, two
sky bridges, a spiral staircase in the trees and a rappel at
the end, and it's also available as the Night Flight Tour at
sunset or after dark.
Lines are 200 feet above the ground, and the longest
is 800 feet. The ride lasts about a minute from launch to
touchdown at 30 mph. The Tree Tops tour is longer and
faster, with the longest line measuring 1,500 feet. and a
hundred-step uphill walk at the beginning. Both courses
take two and a half hours to complete.
Adrenaline and excitement are highlights of ziplining,
but, "We are also an ecotour. We're zipping in and out
of some of the largest trees in the world," Ferguson says,
and guides teach guests about the forest.
It's best for older children over 10 and, "It's a wonderful
family activity," she says. "We get a ton of families with
teenagers. They always have a lot of fun."
Check the weather and dress appropriately, she
advises, and always wear shoes with closed toes.
"Be ready to have your limits tested," she says,
explaining that it's an opportunity for people
to rethink their own possibilities. Book a tour at
