Rutherford Outreach Coalition (ROC) made a connection with the Thermal Belt Rail Trail Ambassador that has become an avid trail supporter, outdoor program director for ROC explained. The community member helped build a connection with the producers of PBS NC Program NC Weekend, a television show that highlights the best things to do in North Carolina. PBS production and ROC shot footage in October for an upcoming segment on the Rail Trail, that will be airing on February 24 at 9:00pm. The segment will also be available for on demand streaming on PBS NC's website, pbsnc.org, FB platform and YouTube channel. It will re-air the following Friday at 5:00pm, Saturday at 10:00am and following Tuesday at 7:30pm. Jerry Stensland, board chair, was interviewed for the segment and talked about the importance of the trail "ROC is thrilled that the rail trail is going to get such incredible publicity. The honor of the trail being included on North Carolina Weekend is a testament to the cooperative spirit around the trail," Stensland said. "The benefi ts of the trail are far ranging including new money going into local businesses to the improved health of our residents and visitors. The statewide attention for our efforts here is well deserved. The segment highlights what the trail means for the community and visitors. County leaders instrumental in the development and marketing of the trail offered comments about the PBS special. "The TBRT is a huge game changing asset for our community," said Don Cason, executive director of the Tourism Development Authority in Rutherford County "It provides our visitors and citizens with enjoyment and pride. Anytime we can get publicity and promotion about our Trail and community, it is a wonderful opportunity to show others about our quality of life here in Rutherford County," he said. John Condrey, former Town Manager for the Town of Forest City and a former County manager said, "The Thermal Belt Rail Trail is tremendous asset for the county. Not only does it give local citizens the opportunity for getting to exercise and enjoy the outsides, but it has become a regional destination for trail enthusiast. "ROC kept the trail spark alive. The trail just shows what can happen when the County, Forest City, Spindale, Rutherfordton and Ruth get together. Of course, the fi nal partner that cemented the project was RHI Legacy Foundation with their fi nancial support. I expect this trail popularity to grow as the assets along the trail (restaurants, shops, POPS, skate park) continue to grow," he said.
