They are finding ways to brighten their days with color through plants, or even food for the table, with the space they have. Multiple colors Bi- and tri-color plants are all the rage these days. Plants with multiple flower and foliage col- ors broaden your color spec- trum. It's a way to add even more color in limited spaces. Basically they give you more bang for your buck. You all know I love plants that do dou- ble-, even triple-duty! More than one flowering Getting the most out of every season from your plants is another trend. This can involve things from planting different plants that flower at different times of the year to individual plants that do double- and triple-duty again. I love vibur- nums because they offer beauti- ful flowers in spring, summer berries that wildlife and our- selves can enjoy, beautiful fall colors, and even attractive structure for the winter. Feeding wildlife The last trend that is growing is gardening for wildlife. Many people take vacations just for the purpose of seeing wildlife. And since we will probably be hanging closer to home for a while yet, why not encourage the wildlife to come to you. I know some of you are thinking I don't want more critters around to destroy my plants, but if done correctly, you can have the best of both worlds. Gardening with intention is the big picture trend we are see- ing. Consider how everything — each plant, piece of garden art or furniture, structures, containers and more — con- tributes to your space as a whole. Just remember, the trendiest thing you can do, is what makes you happy! Happy gardening! (Michael Timm is chief horti- culturalist for Ebert's Green- house Village in Ixonia.)
