The device folds newspaper pages as they feed through the press during the printing process. The equipment being installed was bought from the Ledger-Enquirer, a newspaper out of Columbus, Ga., which moved its printing off-site, said Ben Brickman, print operations manager for The Times Media Co. Crews working in con tinuous 12-hour shifts were expected to complete the project on schedule, Brickman said. The Times made some internal adjustments, such as meeting earlier deadlines, and relied on its backup press in the meantime. The company timed the installation to have a lessened impact on including news that happens at night. "This was planned around things, like the Stanley Cup playoffs," said Dominic Crews, director of operations for The Times. The installation was not expected to greatly affect readers aside from some minor delivery delays. Brickman likened the process to a "pardon our dust" construction project. The purchase of the new folder, along with other capital investments over recent years, demonstrates The Times' commitment to the Region, Crews said. "Lee (Enterprises) and The The Times Media Co. purchased a newer folder for its printing operation in northwest Indiana. The device had been used to print the Ledger-Enquirer (Columbus, Ga.). The company decided to upgrade because of the difficulty in finding replacement parts for its previous folder, dating from 1961. Times is investing in north west Indiana," Crews said. The most recent folder on the main press, a 52,000pound piece of equipment made of steel, was first installed in the Chicago Tribune in 1961. It was removed in 1975, sat in storage, and installed at The Times in 1989. It has been re-engineered several times to meet the changing size of the newspaper page. Its age made it nearly impossible to find replacement parts, and its condition was deteriorating, so company leaders opted to buy a newer, used folder. — The Times (Munster) Reynolds Center offers free training T he Donald W.
