Judges were asked to consider each window on the following criteria: creativity, craftsmanship, holiday spirit, connection with the business, and visibility day and night. A large number of merchants along Main Street decorated their storefront windows. The fi rst place winner was Twisted Pear Taproom & Coffee House. Second place was a tie with Hair Castle and Dovetails & Rusty Nail; and third place was Carolina Pearl Boutique. The MLK Committee of New Hope — Building a Better Community — is hosting three events in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) beginning Saturday, January 15 with a morning prayer service and concluding on Monday, January 17 with the annual MLK Walk at 10 a.m. in Rutherfordton. The MLK events are open to the public On Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. a MLK Morning Prayer Service will be held at the Mt. View Missionary at 230 East Court Street in Rutherfordton. Inspirational prayers will be led by Connie Jenson, Minister Kimberly Wilkerson, Pastor In-Yong Lee, LaKeisha Coffey and Minister Denise Forney. The host pastor is Rev. Jeff Conley. The Rev. Toni Belhu, Rector for St. Gabriel's and St. Francis Episcopal Church in Rutherfordton, will be the guest speaker. On Sunday, January 16 at 3 p.m. there will be an annual MLK Program Celebration at the New Bethel AME Zion Church, 263 Forest Street, Forest City. The host pastor/ speaker will be Rev. Keith Lipsey. The fi nal event of the "I Celebrate MLK" themed weekend will be the annual MLK Walk at 10 a.m. Monday, January 17 - the National MLK Holiday. Everyone interested in joining the walk is asked to meet in front of the courthouse lawn at 10 a.m. and walk to Kiwanis Park in Rutherfordton. Music will be presented by Ruff'ton Acoustic Jam and MLK Community Choir with Willie Givens as the director of music.
