I thought it re- ally took them out of rhythm and helped get us going. That is a defense that I think can and will be really good for us, we have been working on it all year and when we bring ener- gy, it looks good." "The second half, I really thought Peyton Howald and Chase Ridao got us going with their energy and effort. They both have been prac- ticing really well and were locked in. They were just wor- ried about playing hard and doing the little things, and when you do that, it's amaz- ing how good things happen for you. Peyton had 18 points in the second half and didn't miss a field goal. Chase only had three points, but he also had three rebounds, three as- sists and three steals. He re- ally made a lot of big plays for us. Quade also played a great game, finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds and three assists." FRIDAY, JAN. 7 A fter this game, the Pike Central Chargers went on to play Linton on Friday. Coach Elliott stated that this game was a good opportunity, play- ing one of the best teams in the state, to come out, com- pete, play hard and see what they were made of. At the beginning of the first quarter, the Chargers start- ed out strong, but seemed to back down, allowing Linton to score some easy points. This set the stage for a big point deficit that followed the Char- gers throughout the game. By the end of the first half, the Chargers were down by 34 points, leaving the score 54-20 at halftime. Chargers would have to do some seri- ous fighting and play a defen- sive strategy in order to come back. During the second half of the game, they pulled in more and fought for the ball, and were able to land some points and stop others. How- ever, this was not enough to bridge the gap left from the first half of the game. They ended up losing out to Linton by a score of 78 -45. Pike Central's lead scorer for the game was Morton with a total of 17 points scored. Following him was Sorgius with 11 points, Gish with five points, Clark with four points, and Peyton Howald, Braden Howald, Zane Gelhausen and Jagar Dent all with two points scored each. Coach Elliott stated, "Lin- ton was a very good basket- ball team, they are one of the best in the state and I think they definitely showed that. I thought we came out and played a good first couple minutes, but then I thought we played timid and scared at times, and that really gave them some easy buck- ets and allowed them to get going. Hart (Linton player) is a very good player and a tough match-up at the high school level, and they have a lot of other very good piec- es around him. I thought Quade was the second best player on the floor all night, he did a nice job of attacking and being aggressive. He was face guarded from the second possession on and did a nice job. He paced us in scoring with 17, while Kendric Sorgi- us added 11." MONDAY, JAN. 10 The Chargers followed this game up, after some cancella- tions due to weather, on Mon- day against the North Central Thunderbirds for the third place spot in the tournament. This game was a nail bit- ter, to say the least, the score was so up and down, and back and forth that it kept you on the edge of your seat. During the first quarter of the game, the Chargers brought out their battle, fighting to keep those precious points on the rise. They ended up tying the Thunderbirds 12-12 by the end of the quarter. In the second quarter, Pike Central continued to bring up their defense, catching possession of the ball a few times. Howev- er, by halftime, the score was 26 -21, with the Chargers be- ing down five, but in a game this heated, the score would not be there long after half- time. The second half of the game began, and the Char- gers sped up their scoring and heightened their de- fense. They ended the third quarter pulling together the points to keep up with North Central. During the fourth quarter of the game, the Chargers brought out a huge fighting spirit, and the score bounced back and forth with free throws, stolen points and riveting three-pointers that made the crowd wild with excitement. Even though the Chargers fought hard and battled their way through the game, they ended up in defeat with a score of 65 -55. Pike Central's lead scorer for the game was Morten with a tally of 23 points. Following him was Gish with 15 points, Sorgius with 11 points, Bra- den Howald with three points and Peyton Howald with two points. Coach Elliott commented, "The North Central game was a battle. Having played them in the scrimmage and getting the opportunity to see them twice at the tourna- ment, I think we were very fa- miliar with each other. Defen- sively, I was not happy with our effort. We have to take more pride in every posses- sion on that side of the ball. Offensively, I thought we did a better job of attacking, but still need to work on play- ing smarter, we do too much standing and watching, and not reading the defense." "Quade once again was very aggressive and led us in scoring with 23 points. Julian Gish added 15 points and it was good to see him be more aggressive, especially on the glass. Kendric added 11 points again, and I thought he was battling inside. This was another game that I thought we had a great opportunity to get a win and take third place in the tournament, but we came up short. We have to keep chipping away at it, we are very close game after game, we cannot allow some adversity to change our mind- set and where we want to go."
