The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 15, 2021 D-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg I hear from some of you that you missed my article in The Press Dispatch last week. First I'm flattered because people actually read what I write even if it is just to see what I'll write next. Second I'm happy and glad to consider Andy Heuring a friend and if my article helps him in any way I'm glad to do it. I had an article last week but through an email I sent to Andy there was a mis-commu- nication and my email led him wrong so ain't anyone to blame it just happened and you are getting a fresh ramblings this week. I remember talking about putting up some decorations in my yard and how they didn't seem to shine very well. I believe it has some- thing to do with the fact we have no level sur- faces in our yard to put globes and blow-ups on because things are usually made to work properly on good surfaces. The wind and rain we have had also has made them look kind of dingy. Oh well, we tried so I suppose we'll just have to put up with them. The one thing which looks good is our Christmas tree and my wife deserves credit for it looking good. Our grandson helped her "God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ…" (Gal. 6:14). St. Paul was once a proud Pharisee, smug in his self-righteousness. In Philippians 3:5,6, he lists some of the things in which he took great pride: "Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Phari- see; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless." But everything was changed since that day when the Lord appeared to him on the road to Damascus. Suddenly he had seen himself a lost, condemned sinner in the sight of a holy God and had tasted the matchless grace that could reach down from heaven and save even him. He knew now that he could not stand be- fore God in himself, or "on his own two feet," as we say. His only safety before the bar of God was to take refuge in Christ, as he says in Verse 9: "And be found in Him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righ- teousness which is of God by faith." Now he knew, as we all should know, that he really had nothing to boast of as far as his own standing before God was concerned. For the rest of his life, however, he did constantly boast of one thing: the cross, where the Christ he had so bitterly persecuted had died for his sins that he (Paul) might be justified before God. All else of which Paul boasted was em- braced in the cross of Christ. This too is real- ly the only thing we have to boast of and the most godly saint will enthusiastically join Paul in saying: "But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and i unto the world." Jim Gidcumb, Pastor Baptist Baptist Many young people have returned home for the Christmas holidays from colleges or uni- versities. In the past few months, they have discovered a secular college is one of the most hostile places in America to Christiani- ty. About 50 percent of church youth have de- parted from their faith when they graduate. On campuses, they have discovered a liberal mindset that makes it "politically incorrect" to be Christian. Many of our teens leave family, friends and their local church with a strong faith in God. When they leave home, most believe in God. On many campuses today, gay and lesbi- an organizations are encouraged and subsi- dized, while Christian- ity is discouraged and even scorned by faculty and school officials. On some campuses, they encourage gay faculty to serve as roll models for students. It is sad to see anti-Christian forces on many campuses dom- inating the academic de- partments and adminis- tration. As a result of this anti-Christian envi- ronment, many of America's choice young peo- BRENTON CHAPEL CHURCH of CHRIST SUNDAY SERVICE TIMES: Sunday School 10 am Worship 10:30 am Night Worship 6 pm 1194 E. "Give glory to God in heav- en, and on earth let there be peace among the people who please God" (Luke 2:14, NCV ). Christmas trees might be secular decorations, but they invoke, in Christians, thoughts of a more precious tree; the cross. Jesus came to us on Christmas for the pur- pose of bringing peace to his people through the cross of Calvary. Let us carry his glory as a child of the most high God. He came to redeem us from every thought, word, or ac- tion that didn't match up to our God-likeness. He destroyed our sins and gave us eternal life. He empowered us for vic- tory. This is a Christmas gift for us to open everyday. We are remembering those hurting from the loss of loved ones, those battling illness- es. May God spread his gift of healing and peace this Christ- mas season. Ralph Newkirk, Pastor Marla Morrison, Reporter AYRSHIRE VALLEY G.B. CHURCH 1947 E. Co. Rd. 375 S.
