B-4 Wednesday, December 15, 2021 The Press-Dispatch Girls' basketball defeated at Southridge By Matthew Hacyraft The Lady Chargers' varsi- ty basketball team battled at Southridge against the Raid- ers on Thursday, December 9. In the first half of the game, the Lady Chargers seemed to struggle with getting the ball in the bas- ket, only scoring 11 points by halftime, leaving them in an 11-point deficit to the Raiders. The Lady Char- gers' energy appeared to be drained out of the game, with the game being a slow- er-paced match-up. The team was short-handed and that could have had something to do with the lack of energy in the game. The Chargers were missing Anna White- head, Kya Sullivan and Hai- ley Parker. During the sec- ond half of the game, the team was only able to pull to- gether five points total, leav- ing the score at a staggering loss of 40 -16. Leading the team in scor- ing was Brailey Mills with a total of six points. Follow- ing her was Mallory Hunt with four, Kahle Young with three, Keena Young with two and Shelby Meadows with one point. "It was a slower-paced game where we struggled to get the ball in the basket. We were shorthanded, but we just didn't play with enough energy to really make this a game," commented Coach Kyle McCutchan. JUNIOR VARSITY The Lady Chargers' junior varsity team also played the Raiders on Thursday, on- ly playing two quarters due to the low number of players on the varsity team. The ju- nior varsity team lost Shelby Meadows to the varsity team and was also out two players, Anna Whitehead and Ash- lynn Kirk, during this game. In the first quarter of the game, the Rebels blew past the Chargers, scoring 20 points in two-pointers, while the Chargers only pulled to- gether seven points. By the end of the game, the score was 26 -16, with the Chargers losing by ten points, and the Rebels scoring more points in the first quarter than the Chargers did the whole game. During the first quarter of the game, the Lady Chargers hit the court ready to play and did well by tallying 11 points for the quarter. How- ever, this put them behind by six points, which was entire- ly attainable for them. In the next quarter, the Lady Char- gers gained a point on South Spencer, closing the gap be- tween them and the win. In the second half of the game, however, South Spencer pulled away from the Lady Chargers, mak- ing six three-pointers, nine two-pointers and one free throw. The Lady Chargers did fight by making three three-pointers, one by Kah- le Young and two by Brailey Mills, following that with six two-pointers and some good free throws. It was still not enough to beat the shear point deficit made by South Spencer, leaving the Lady Chargers defeated by a score of 61-40. The Lady Chargers were lead in scoring by Mills, with a tally of 16 points. Fol- lowing her was Mallory Hunt with eight, Kahle Young with seven, Shelby Meadows with six and Kya Sullivan with five points. Coach Kyle McCutchan stated, "I thought we played a solid first half and were down three in the beginning of third, but we made too many unforced turnovers against their pressure, and they got hot and hit six second-half three-pointers and pulled away. They are a good team, but we need to compete for four quarters." JUNIOR VARSITY Lady Chargers' junior var- sity also played South Spen- cer on Monday, losing by a score of 49 -23. The junior varsity team seemed to be a little off their game this go-round. In the first half of the game, the team only scored 10 points to South Spencer's 19, leaving them at a nine-point deficit at halftime. This would have been a good catchup point, but the JV Lady Chargers seemed to be missing the mark during this game. The team had some good shots throughout the game, with Tiffany Artega hitting three three-pointers, one in each of the first three quarters. Un- fortunately, they were not able to put the points togeth- er for the win and ended up taking a loss against South Spencer. The lead scorer for the JV team was Artega, with 11 points. Following her was Ahlynn Kirk with five, Ru- by Sallee with four, Keena Young with two and Emily Delobel with one point.
