The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 15, 2021 B-3 Charger freshmen lose in overtime By Matthew Haycraft The Charger boys' fresh- man basketball team faced off against Tecumseh on their home court at Pike Central on Thursday, December 9. The freshmen Chargers started off the game strong, putting together 10 points to the Braves' two in the first quarter of the game. During the second quarter, the battle was on and the Braves gained on the Chargers, leaving the score at halftime 14-7, with the Chargers in the lead. In the second half of the game, the heat was on the rise, with the Braves grabbing for points to attain the win. Unfor- tunately, the Chargers were unable to make it through to score in this quarter, and the Braves had earned 11 points, putting them four points in the lead with only one quarter left to go. The fourth quarter be- gan and the Chargers fought for the extra points to catch the win. By the end of a hard- fought quarter, after lots of last-minute points, the teams were tied and the game went into over time. The Pike Central freshman were ready to give it all they had to achieve the victory over the Braves. The clock started and the points seemed to fly until the last minutes of the game when it all seemed to hit slow motion. Even though the Chargers were close, they ended up losing by three points. The Chargers were lead in scoring by Matthew Mead- ows, with a tally of 10 points. Following him were Barrett Cooper with nine points, and Noah Meece, Jakob Newkirk and Conner Loveless with two points each. Coach Mohammed stated, "This team is learning how to play hard. We are building a winning culture. We under- stand that it will take some time. I see confidence build- ing in the entire team. As long as we continue to improve and grow as players, the future of this program will be one to be proud of. This team is filled with great kids on and off the floor and represent Pike Cen- tral admirably."
