In "Fixer to Fabulous Holiday Surprise," airing Tuesday, Dec. 14, the husband-and-wife remodeling team and their crew give sorely needed upgrades to the Bella Vista Animal Shelter, a nonprofit near their home in Northern Arkansas. Among the items on the agenda were new dog kennels, a customized cat playroom, a refreshed lobby and exterior and an improved outdoor space. Once completed, the shelter will reopen for a holiday pet adoption event for the community. It was a labor of love for the couple, who themselves have several animals that were either rescued or adopted from a shelter. "We're just passionate about animals," Jenny Marrs explains, "and we thought this could be a really fun project and to do something a little bit different and help an organization in our community that sometimes is overlooked. ... And we also wanted to make people aware of adopting when you're looking for a pet and so we just thought this would be a great opportunity to kind of highlight that." But this being a nonprofit run only on donations, the budget was tight so the couple not only had to make the money work, but also create spaces that were functional and beautiful. For the latter, they sought input from the people who run the shelter, and with regard to the former they enlisted other craftspeople to donate their time and efforts as well. Touches like a covered porch and a new sign, landscaping, cabinets and lighting were also added. At the end of the six-week project, it was a space that felt like home – with pets, of course. "I think everybody, the employees and volunteers ... were thrilled," Jenny Marrs says. "They care about the animals and they were ex cited about how the space will function for the animals. But they also recognized the fact that now it's just a beautiful space that people are going to feel welcome (in). And I think that was always top of mind for them – bringing people in to feel comfortable there so they can come and look at pets and adopt an animal."
