Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford (who had previously de- buted title characters George and Louise Jefferson on "All in the Family") heard about it through the newspaper, along with the rest of the country. "I didn't realize [the show was canceled]," Sanford said in an in- terview with the Television Acad- emy in 2002. "My cousin in New York is the one that called me and said, 'I understand 'The Jeffer- sons' has been cancelled.' I said, 'Who said so?' I hadn't heard. She said, 'It's in the tabloids.' That's how I found out. They could at least have called us about it." That means, of course, they didn't get the chance to shoot an episode that would function as a real finale, and so the final epi- sode is a pretty unremarkable ep- isode in which George becomes the leader of a Girl Guides-esque youth group, the Red Robins. Q: Was that Riz Ahmed play- ing the boy-genius tech mil- lionaire on "Doctor Who"? It looked like him. A: It wasn't Riz Ahmed. It did look a little like him, but more no- tably, the character seemed a lot like one he did play. Ahmed, who had his breakout role as the wrongfully accused lead in HBO's grim legal series "The Night Of," played a different boy genius tech millionaire in 2016's "Jason Bourne," but the film's writers can't exactly be ac- cused of copying the very similar "Doctor Who" character (from the 2008 episode "The Sontaran Strategem"), since both charac- ters are pretty transparent riffs on Facebook founder Mark Zucker- berg. The "Doctor Who" version of the character was played by Ryan Sampson, better known now for playing Boz on the British alt-his- tory thriller series "The Franken- stein Chronicles." It could just as easily have been Ahmed, though, as he was a young actor in the U.K. at the same time and just about the only Brit actor to have never done a "Doctor Who." Have a question?
