So begins the script of Barbara Robinson's The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, based on her novel of the same name. The Shelby High School Theatre Department is bringing this timeless story to life this holiday season with its production scheduled for Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at 3 p.m. But the pageant's predictability is soon turned upside down when the rambunctious Herdman children, a rough and tough group of siblings from the wrong side of the tracks, descend upon the pageant, lured by the promise of free dessert at Sunday school, and deter- mined to win all the lead roles for themselves. However, as the story unfolds, Beth and her community find that the "same old" Christmas story is actually rejuvenated by the creativity, energy and unexpected sincerity of the Herdmans. The show is a "widely beloved Christmas tale, warm and incredibly funny, full of characters both relatable and utterly unique," according to StageAgent. com. "I remember reading the story when I was younger and enjoying it, and I've found that a lot of the students know it as well," says Dan Terhane, theatre teacher at Shelby High. "This is such a fun play, and we thought it would be just right for our winter show," says Terhane. "We haven't done a winter show in a while, and this one seemed perfect for the season." The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is being directed by Shelby High student Senior Harper Lineberger. "I've been an actor or technician with Shelby High theatre for over half my life," says Lineberger. "My involvement with the plays and helping backstage made me want to be a director, and finally I got to my senior year. I really enjoy directing and I hope to direct more plays in my future." "We have a tradition of students directing shows, but that is typically done in the spring," says Terhane. "But Harper really liked this play, and it was a good fit for her to direct." Tickets are $5 each and can be pur- chased at www.shelbyhightheatre.com or at the door. Lilly Burr, Riley Beam, Chance Allen, Kasandra Simpson are directed by Senior Harper Lineberger in a rehearsal of Shelby High's production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, slated for Dec. 17-18.
