The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 8, 2021 D-1 CHURCH Submit church items: Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Romans 1:18 -20 declares that God has re- vealed Himself to man in creation. Not that we can learn His plan of salvation from creation — far from it. But the creation: the glory of its star-studded heavens, the beauty of its flowers and sunsets, the sun and rain and crops to sup- ply us with food, and the unchangeable laws of nature, all show forth, not only the existence of God, but His power, His love, His justice, so that man is a responsible being and, as Verse 20 says, "without excuse" for the deplorable condition in which he finds himself. A believer, talking with an atheistic evolu- tionist one day, took out his watch, looked at it and put it back into his pocket, saying: "I have a wonderful watch; it keeps perfect time; nev- er misses a second." "What make is it? " the atheist asked. "Oh, no make," answered the Christian. "Well, who manufactured it? " "Oh, nobody; it just put itself together some- how." "Nonsense," said the atheist, "A watch can't just come into existence. Somebody had to de- sign it and somebody had to manufacture it." "True," said the Christian, "yet you expect me to believe that this universe, with its bil- lions of stars and planets, all working togeth- er in perfect order, just came about by itself; that it had no Designer, no Creator and no one who keeps it running? Isn't that nonsense? " No wonder Paul says that the godless are "without excuse," including even the vast ma- jority of "religious" people, who salve their con- sciences by giving a small part of each week or each day to the performance of some reli- gious rite but keep God out of their business- es, their politics, their social relationships — their hearts. But thank God, as He has revealed His pow- er and glory in creation, He has revealed His mercy and grace, His plan of salvation, in the Bible, where we read how "Christ died for our sins" (I Cor. 15:3), so that we might have "re- demption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of His grace" (Eph. 1:7). Jim Gidcumb, Pastor Baptist Baptist The basic building block of our American society is the family. When our homes are de- stroyed, our society will eventually disinte- grate. The church must proclaim the message of the Bible as it relates to the home. When homes are broken and shattered it must first focus on restoration and in some situations for- giveness and a new beginning. But we must never depart from God's original plan for the home. Socialism, unions, and liberal school boards have declared war on parents. The American family is in crisis and on- ly the message of Jesus Christ can change things. A recent Southern Baptist study dis- covered some alarming facts about Chris- tian homes. The study found that 88 % leave the church at age 18 and never return. The di- vorce rate among evangelical Christians is al- most as bad as that of non-church people. Each year in America one million children see their parents divorce. The majority of children in America have less than ten minutes of meaning- ful conversation with their parents each week. Most of this time is with a mother. Children need the lov- ing, caring attention of both parents. The pres- ence or absence of a father in a child's life is the largest factor in predicting whether a child will graduate from high school, become involved in crimes, drugs or get pregnant before 18. The church must be at the forefront of help- ing troubled families. Too many pastors today believe that they can create God in man's im- age and adopt a new interpretation of the Bible to accommodate a changing society. This is a poor substitute and has little to offer troubled families or lost people who attend the church. ARTHUR G.B. CHURCH 5670 S. You are welcome to join us at that time; Sunday morning wor- ship at 10 :30 a.m.; Business meeting the third Sunday of the month, following morn- ing worship. How my spirit rejoic- es in God my Savior. For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all gen- erations will call me blessed" (Luke 1:46,47,48, NLT). Mary's song is often called the Magnificat, It has often been used as the basis for cho- ral music and hymns. Mary glorifies God in song for what he is going to do for the world. May we praise God each day for what he has done for the world by sending his son, Je- sus, to save the world. We are remembering those in prayer who have lost loved ones, those who are ill and the poor in spirit. May they find peace through Jesus our Sav- ior. We are remembering the family of Cindy Harrison in prayer. Cindy passed peace- fully into the arms of the Fa- ther this week. We invite you to worship with us. The Light of the World is Jesus Jesus said, "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" ( John 8:12). "The whole world was lost in darkness of sin. The Light of the world is Jesus. Like sunshine at noonday, His glo- ry shone in; The Light of the world is Jesus. No darkness have we who in Jesus abide; The Light of the world is Je- sus. We walk in the light when we follow our Guide. The Light of the world is Jesus. Ye dwell- ers in darkness with sin-blind- ed eyes. The Light of the world is Jesus. Go, wash at His bid- ding, and light will arise; The Light of the world is Jesus. No need of the sunlight in Heav- en we're told; The Light of the world is Jesus. The Lamb is the Light in the city of gold, The Light of the world is Jesus. Come to the light, 'tis shining for thee; Sweetly the light has dawned upon me; Once I was blind, but now I can see; The Light of the world is Jesus"— by Philip P. Bliss. "Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven" (Psalms 119:18). What does revelation mean? It means that something that has been hidden is now made known. If it isn't revealed, it remains hidden. Some peo- ple see God that way, hidden and unknown. Such a view as- sumes God doesn't want to be known or even that God is in- capable of being known be- cause "God" is just a vague impersonal force, like gravity. But God has revealed Himself. He is not hidden. He has spo- ken to us, and if we will listen, we can not only discover what He is like, but we can come to know Him in a personal way. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. Your pres- ence will be appreciated and I'm sure you will feel the bless- ing of God. May God bless each and everyone.
