Central By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central varsity boys' basketball team played Evansville Central at USI on Thursday, December 2, losing by a score of 56 -40. The Chargers came out strong in the first half of the game, tying the score with Evansville Central 23-23, pull- ing out some good defense. However, in the third quarter, Evansville Central came out very physical, and the Char- gers battled on the court to gain points. They were unable to gain on Evansville and end- ed up being 11 points under by the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Chargers con- tinued to fight into the fourth quarter of the game, but the damage was done and on the rise. Evansville Central ended up gaining more points, effec- tively defeating the Chargers. Charger senior Quade Mor- ton led the team in scoring with a total of 13 points. Fol- lowing him was sophomore Julian Gish with eight points, junior Peyton Howald with seven points, junior Kend- ric Sorgius with five points, sophomore Chase Ridao with three points, and juniors Bra- den Howald and Jagar Dent, both with two points each. Coach Hunter Elliott said, "This was a great opportuni- ty for our team and the kids. Getting to play in that arena, and on that stage is something that I think they will always remember. We came out and played a really good first half being tied 23 to 23. I thought defensively we did a great job the whole game. Our issue was some unforced turnovers in the third quarter that led to some easy layups and finish- es for them. They were physi- cal with us in the second half and we didn't respond to it real well. We have to learn to play our game regardless of how the other team wants to guard us. We have to make sure we allow the game to come to us and not force the issue. I real- ly thought Julian Gish played a pretty good game and was aggressive. He finished with 8 points and Quade Morton led us in scoring with 13 points."
