Don't Neglect Your Eye Health. We're Open to See You Now! Dr. Clint Shoultz 715 S. 9th St., Petersburg 812-354-9400 Locally Owned and Operated Petersburg Holiness celebrates 75th anniversary By James Capozella "The Petersburg Holiness Church has seen a lot of transi- tion in its lifetime," according to Valerie Searls, wife of Pas- tor Chad Searls, who has been at the helm for the past eight years and gave a well-doc- umented history of church members and developments as a part of last Sunday's spe- cial service. It was followed by a 75 -balloon release by church members. Pastor Searls said, "It has been a real privilege to pas- tor the Petersburg Holiness Church these last eight years. The church has a rich, spiri- tual Wesleyan heritage that has been preserved from its inception until the present. I have been humbled by what I have learned through digging into the archives and survey- ing the church's influence in this community. I so appreci- ate the price that was paid and the sacrifices that were made to ensure the success of the church and the up-building of God's Kingdom among us. Over the years, the church has seen many sons and daugh- ters brought to salvation. It has nurtured them on to ho- liness, and many have been called into the ministry. "When we assumed the position of pastor in 2013, the church was experienc- ing some real challenges. But thanks be to God, through the prayer and faithfulness of some seasoned saints, this work has experienced growth and revival. We have a won- derful congregation, who we dearly love and appreciate, and as the church continues to grow both spiritually and nu- merically, we trust that the Pe- tersburg Holiness Church will always be 'a place where God and people meet' (inscribed on the church's name plate)." Valerie Searls wrote about transition in the November 21 church bulletin: "From storefront on Main Street to a brick-walled basement to an above-ground sanctu- ary, which would be remod- eled down the road. Then, there came the awkward mid- dle time of worshiping in the school. And finally, the beau- tiful new brick structure com- pleted on Knox Road. But the church's story isn't about the buildings. It's about the glory. It's about the men and wom- en of God who paid a price in the place of prayer to ensure that the sanctuary was filled with the presence of the Lord so that there would be a har- vest of souls. I am one of those souls." She continued, "I strive today to follow in their foot- steps so that others who are coming behind me can find the Holy way as well." "All things work togeth- er for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His Pur- pose" (Romans 8:28). CELEBRATING 75 YEARS The Petersburg Holiness Church on Knox Road cele- brated their 75th anniversary this past Sunday with a trib- ute to 11 pastors, a display of photos depicting the history and previous locations and church buildings. The pho- tos were of the many area res- idents, like Loyace and Vicky Lamar, who have shaped the destiny of Petersburg Holi- ness Church. They are the lon- gest-standing members of the Petersburg Holiness Church at 41 years. Pastor Chad Searls follows 11 men who have guided the present day Petersburg Ho- liness Church, first known as Pilgrim Holiness Church. Raymond Street was the first pastor back in post World War II 1946. During the course of three decades, many names surface as a lasting legacy, particularly of James Sneed and his wife, Iris, who was present for the 75th anniver- sary. Pastor Sneed had the longest tenure, pastoring the church for 25 years from 1966 until 1991. Pilgrim Holi- ness Church became Peters- burg Holiness Church in 2004, when Paul Mullen was Pastor. First Pastor Raymond Street was followed by Lee Lashbrook, Johnny Yount, Herman Decker, O.W. Willis, Richard Beard, Walter Sloan, James Sneed, Mark Ranke, Paul Mullen and Craig Line. Pastor Chad Searls introduced former Pastor Mark Ranke and Sister Diane. Pastor Ran- ke was well at ease playing trumpet beside Loyace La- mar. Sister Iris Sneed was al- so a special guest at the 75th Anniversary service. The church was a Pilgrim Holiness Church from 1946 until 2004. At that time, the voting membership voted to withdraw from the Midwest Pilgrim Holiness Church de- nomination and become an independent Petersburg Ho- liness Church, according to Pastor Searls. The ocean-going, sailing ship inset in the brick breeze- way of the church alludes to the first years of the church and the name Pilgrim Ho- liness. The Becky Watkins family purchased the "Pilgrim Ship" for the new building in 1999. Becky died a very young and untimely death from cir- rhosis of the liver and was a member of the church, accord- ing to Pastor Searls. Searls and his wife, Val- erie, have been married for 25 years and have three chil- dren: 21-year-old daughter, Ju- lene Moore, and sons, Josiah, 17, and Jace, 11. A 75-balloon release took place at the Petersburg Holiness Church on November 21 when the members cele- brated their 75th Anniversary after Sunday's special service. Valerie Searls photo The "Pilgrim sailing ship" that is inset into the car- port at the front of the Petersburg Holiness Church sanctuary was a gift from the Becky Watkins family. Becky was a member of the church and died a very young and untimely death from cirrhosis of the liver. James Capozella photo Last Sunday's special 75th Anniversary service at the Petersburg Holiness Church on Knox Road included music featuring trumpets played by Mark Ranke and Loyace Lamar. Chad Searls was at the pulpit with Vicky Lamar on organ and Valerie Searls on the piano.
