Maybe the Holy Spirit is telling me that this could be one of the seals men- tioned in Revelations in the Bible; that God is sending a warning to all people of earth, to pick up their cross and start following Jesus Christ, and if we don't, we're in for a bumpy ride (to say the least). "Yea, I walk through the valley of the 'shadow' of death, I will fear no evil. For you are with me, your rod and your staff, they comfort me" (Psalms 23:4). Listen to what God is try- ing to tell us about the "shad- ows." I believe these things. These are a "Shadow" of the things that were to come. Co- lossians 2—Things like pes- tilence, lies, violence in our streets, world leaders prepar- ing their weapons for war, and all kinds of abominations. We are living in the "Shad- ows" today. For it is written, "As I live says the LORD ev- ery knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess to God. So each of us shall give an ac- count of himself to the LORD" (Romans 14:11-12). Most of those celebra- tions take our minds off the busyness of life. Some of those celebrations will focus on fam- ily, friends and faith, unfortu- nately, in that order. Putting God first assures us of His presence and His power to be with us. For many, celebration brings smiles and laughter. For others, it is a reminder of loss, a time of depression and sometimes despair. The Good News, at least in part, is that God recognizes our need, and through the Messiah whose coming we celebrate, He meets those needs. If we will allow Him, He wonder- fully lifts us up and out of the cares of this world, including the loss of loved ones, nega- tive emotions, and He restores meaning and purpose to life. Much of our outlook depends on our focus. The Bible teach- es us clearly that Jesus bears our burdens. In fact, He teach- es us in Matthew's Gospel, to seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness, and our ev- ery need will be met. This season reminds us to look to Jesus.
