Titans face long-time winning program in Lawrenceburg By Andy Heuring SG Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern with face a program with a long tradition of winning this Saturday in the regional. The Titans host Lawrenceburg (11-1) at 5 p.m. on Saturday. Lawrenceburg, ranked number 5 in 3A, is on an 11-game win streak. The Tigers lost their opening game against county rival East Central 34-6 in their opening game. East Central is a 4A team with a 10 -2 record, who faces Evansville Memori- al in the regional Saturday. Lawrenceburg coach Ryan Knigga is in his 11th year with the Tigers and is 99 -34 over that time. This will be their third consecu- tive trip to the regional and their third con- secutive season to arrive at the regional 11- 1. In the previous two seasons, they lost to Heritage Hills in 2019 22-0 and Southridge 49 -28. Both Southridge and Heritage Hills advanced to the state finals. In 2016, Lawrenceburg advanced to the state championship game, where they lost to Fort Wayne Concordia 56 -14. Lawrenceburg's style resembles Heritage Hills. They run a misdirection offense, but have a way more capable passing game. Lead by four-year starter and All-State quarterback Garrett Yoon, the Tigers have averaged 47 points a game since their sea- son opening 34-6 loss. They have scored 45 points or more in six of their games, includ- ing a 91-12 win over Rushville. At the same time, their defense has been extremely stingy, allowing more than 14 points in only one of their 11 wins. It was to 6A Southport, who they beat 45 -20, albeit Southport was 0 -10 this year. In the sectional championship game, they beat 11-0 Brownstown Central 35 -14. It was tied 7-7 early in the second quarter, when Lawrenceburg's sophomore tailback Tee- gan Bennett broke off a 69 -yard run on the first play of the series for a quick score. They then blocked Brownstown Central's punt and took over at midfield, and promptly scored to make it 21-7. In the second half, they ground two scoring drives to salt away a 35 -14 win. Bennett ran for 166 yards and three touch- downs in the game. He only played because Lawrenceburg's senior tailback, Luke Pierce, 5'8" 149 lbs., suffered an ankle injury the pre- vious week. Titan Coach Nick Hart said, "They want to run the ball first, but are very capable in the pass game." Along with having a returning All-State quarterback, Hart said they have very capable receivers on the outside. They also have a Notre Dame commit on their of- fensive line. Hart said their offense will line up in the shotgun almost every play, but unlike most teams, they use tightends in the shotgun. He said they use play action to set up big shots downfield and to throw hitch routes. "They do all those things very well," said Hart. "They want to run the football, but you can't see out against the run because they throw it so well. We have to figure out a way to get them off the field and not let them con- trol the pace of the game," said Hart. Gibson Southern counters with an offense that scores quickly and often. They have their own standout quarter- back in Brady Allen. So far this year, he has thrown for 3,177 yards, completing 184 of 248 passes for 47 touchdowns. His top receiver has been senior Rory Heltsley, who has caught 67 passes for 1,219 yards and 20 touchdowns. Brayden Malone has caught 21 passes for 493 yards and seven touchdowns. Malone has seen more balls thrown his way since Cole McKee was injured in the Mt. Vernon game. Prior to that, Malone played mainly on de- fense. In the sectional final, McKee caught three passes for 142 yards and three touch- downs. "It is going to be two good football teams. That is the way it should be, only eight left. You have to take care of the football. Defen- sively, they are going to try to get pressure on us." The Saturday evening game should be a classic with two strong teams, with similar programs, squaring off to see who advances to the semi-state. Adrean Lukeman leads a gain of Titan defenders to Heritage Hills' quarterback Luke Rickleman. They sacked him for an eight-yard loss. Brayden Malone runs down the sideline on his way to a 50-yard touchdown. It was one of three on the night. He caught three passes for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Titan Ben Luttrell tackles a Patriot ball carrier in the offensive backfield for a loss. Titan receiver Rory Heltsley runs under a Brady Allen pass in the endzone. Heltsley caught eight pass- es for 107 yards including this 27-yard touchdown. Titan defender Logan Maurer pulls Shane Staples to the ground for a loss on the play.
