A recent study suggests that the longer people sit each day the higher their risk of chronic health conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Researchers studied 63,000 men and found that those who sat for 4 hours or less each day were much less likely to have a chronic health problem when compared to men who sat longer tan 4 hours a day. Those who sat for 6 hours daily had a significantly higher risk of diabetes. Experts say the study doesn't imply cause-and-effect; however, the link suggests it's a good idea to sit less and move more. THIS SATURDAY AT THE SATURDAY JULY 6 Celebrate the Summer at our Grand Opening We officially kick off Summer at the Market with a celebratory opening featuring music, special guests and great fun and food offered by a variety of vendors. We start with music at 1:30pm and at 2pm join Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, State Senator Chris Larson, State Representative Christine Sinicki and Milwaukee County Supervisor Jason Haas for remarks, to meet your neighbors and enjoy the beautiful space that hosts our Market. This Week's Entertainment: Barb and Tom Webber 1:30PM We welcome WAMI award winners Barb & Tom Webber who bring their own brand of roots/Americana and folk. Barb Webber is a natural storyteller, a talent honed by years of listening. She writes a capella, letting the words choose their own notes without constraints. Hailing from Texas, Tom began jamming in grade school and hasn't stopped. He has developed an interesting two-finger picking style for tender ballads that contrasts dramatically with his country-rock strum. Tom is persistent in finding arrangements that bring out the personality of each song and his voice carries the rumble of the Texas Panhandle, a beautiful contrast to the of Barb's clarity. This Week's Education: Every Drop Counts Come and meet the staff of Prism Technical who, along with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District ("MMSD") is promoting the installation of rain barrel water collection through its "Every Drop Counts" water conservation campaign. We can reduce water pollution, lower water costs and help preserve Lake Michigan – all by capturing water from a roof's downspout into a rain barrel! Come and learn how you can participate at your own home! Note – scheduling difficulties prevent offering a Yoga class this week Space for additional vendors is available at the season-long rate of $250 or the daily stall rate of $25. Updates and schedules are at www.gardendistrictfarmersmarket.com. The Market is presented by the Garden District Neighborhood Association and sponsored by: 709 W. Oklahoma Ave. 481-8170 Accepting Blue Cross, Anthem, TRICARE, Express Scripts and more... Woman charged in Milwaukee homicide Suspect allegedly shot ex-lover in back of head By SARAH PRYOR Conley News Service MILWAUKEE – A Waukesha woman has been charged with homicide after allegedly shooting her ex-lover in the back of the head at his Milwaukee residence following an argument last month. Diana Garcia, 29, was charged with second-degree reckless homicide in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on June 13. According to the criminal complaint, Milwaukee police responded to a report of a shooting at 1821 S. 12th St. just before 3 p.m. June 8. They found Antonio Duran lying unconscious with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. Duran died at Froedtert Memorial Hospital the next morning. A witness told police that he saw Garcia drive into the alley near the residence on the afternoon of June 8, and that Duran walked up to the passenger side window. The witness said Duran and Garcia had a short conversation before Duran turned around and walked away from the car, waving his hands in a "dismissive gesture." According to the criminal complaint, Garcia told police that she and Duran had an "on-again, off-again" romantic relationship for the past 12 or 13 years, and that the two hadn't spoken for almost a year until she "called him for sex" in April. Since then, the two had seen each other every other weekend. According to the complaint, on the evening of the alleged murder, Garcia and Duran got into an altercation because she believed Duran might have had another girl over at the house. Garcia told that Duran grabbed her by the hair on the back of her head and produced a gun. She said she then ran to her car to grab her gun and planned to drive away, but Duran was "clinging to the window" before turning around and running toward the house. She told police she believed Duran was going to pick up a revolver, which she claimed to see lying on the ground, so she grabbed her gun and shot at Duran with the intention of scaring him. Garcia told police that when she realized Duran was hit, she panicked, drove to the lakefront and threw the gun and a casing into the lake. However, the complaint states that Garcia changed her story and said she gave the gun to her sister. Additionally, the complaint states that no gun was found in the area of Duran's body . If convicted, Garcia could face 25 years behind bars and $100,000 in fines. Court Commissioner David Sweet set her bail at $50,000. Garcia waived her right to a preliminary hearing at a June 24 hearing, and will appear in court for a scheduling conference Wednesday .
