Brainerd Dispatch • October 24 - 30, 2021 •19 By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON HBO MAX "Love Life" - Season 2 It's the romantic adventure of a lifetime when "Love Life" returns to HBO Max with Season 2 on Thursday, Oct. 28. A romantic- comedy anthology series, "Love Life" follows one person through the entirety of their romantic life — from first love to lasting love. While Season 1 starred series executive producer Anna Kendrick ("Pitch Perfect," 2012) as Darby Carter, a young woman exploring her roller coaster love life in New York City, this newest season turns in a dif - ferent direction. William Jackson Harper ("The Good Place") stars as Season 2's protagonist, Marcus Watkins, a man re-entering the dat- ing scene after the end of a long- term relationship with his university sweetheart, Emily (Maya Kazan, "Mosaic"). As Marcus searches for romantic fulfilment and adjusts to his new life, his friends and family help him to rediscover his priorities in life. Narrated by Keith David ("The Princess and the Frog," 2009), Season 2 also stars Steven Boyer ("Hustlers," 2019), Leslie Bibb ("Iron Man," 2008), Kimberly Elise ("The Manchurian Candi - date," 2004), John Earl Jelks ("True Detective"), Punkie Johnson ("Sat- urday Night Live"), Arian Moayed ("Succession"), Ego Nwodim ("Saturday Night Live"), Blair Un- derwood ("Deep Impact," 1998) and Whitney Uland ("Janessica"). WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Army of Thieves" (2021) It's good news for fans of Zack Snyder's "Army of the Dead," the zombie heist action-thriller that blasted its way onto Netflix earlier this year: the film's prequel, "Army of Thieves," premieres on Netflix on Friday, Oct. 29. Producer, writer and director Zack Snyder, famous for hits "300" (2006), "Man of Steel" (2013), "Wonder Woman" (2017) and so many more, returns to the screen with this new heist thriller, and it's as action-packed as one could expect from this creative powerhouse. Set six years before the events of "Army of the Dead," this film focuses on German safe cracker Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer, "The Red Baron," 2008). During the beginning stages of the zombie apocalypse, Ludwig is hired by a mysterious woman (Nathalie Emmanuel, "Game of Thrones") to lead a team of aspir- ing thieves on a mission to crack open three high-security safes. With a story from Snyder and Shay Hatten ("John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum," 2019) and a screen- play by Hatten, the film is directed by Schweighöfer himself. Ruby O. Fee ("The Invisibles," 2017), Stuart Martin ("Miss Scarlet and the Duke"), Guz Khan ("Four Weddings and a Funeral"), Jonathan Cohen ("Family Business") and Noémie Nakai ("Death Note: Light Up the New World," 2016) also star. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Come Away" (2020) Take a trip to a land far, far away with the fantasy hit "Come Away," available on Hulu on Monday, Oct. 25. An homage to J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan" and Lewis Carroll's "Al- ice's Adventures in Wonderland," "Come Away" features the main characters of these classic stories as they help a new generation of chil- dren get lost in adventure. When their older brother dies, siblings Peter (Jordan A. Nash, "Aladdin," 2019) and Alice (Keira Chansa, "Na- tional Theatre Live: Small Island," 2019) end up on unforgettable ad- ventures in Wonderland and Nev- erland to forget about the terrible despair in their real lives. But will the children return to their parents or will they choose imagination and adventure forever? This fun family film is directed by Brenda Chapman ("Brave," 2012) and written by Marissa Kate Goodhill ("Lost and Found," 2013). Gugu Mbatha-Raw ("Belle," 2013), David Oyelowo ("The Water Man," 2020), Angelina Jolie ("Maleficent," 2014), Reece Yates ("Les Misérables," 2019), Jenny Galloway ("Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again," 2018), Anna Chancellor ("The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," 2005) and Michael Caine ("The Dark Knight," 2008) star in the film, alongside newcom- ers Carter Thomas, Ava Fillery and Jonathan Garcia. WHAT'S NEW ON PARAMOUNT+ "Star Trek: Prodigy" - Season 1 Get ready for another generation of Trekkies to grow up with the new animated series "Star Trek: Prodigy" coming exclusively to Paramount+ on Thursday, Oct. 28. Taking place after the events of "Star Trek: Voyager" in the year 2383, a group of six adventur- ous misfit teenagers in the Delta Quadrant happen upon a disused Starfleet vessel, stealing the ship and using it to explore the galaxy. Kate Mulgrew revives her "Star Trek: Voyager" character, Kathryn Janeway, in the series, and is joined by Ella Purnell ("Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," 2016), Brett Gray ("On My Block"), Jason Mantzoukas ("Big Mouth"), Rylee Alazraqui ("Summer Camp Is- land"), Dee Bradley Baker ("Space Jam," 1996) and Angus Imrie ("The Kid Who Would Be King," 2019). Written and executive produced by brothers Dan and Kevin Hage- man ("The Lego Movie," 2014), the series is directed by Ben Hibon ("Codehunters," 2006). "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin" (2021) The Paranormal Activity franchise brings fans a brand-new super- natural horror just in time for Hal- loween with "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," premiering Friday, Oct. 29, on Paramount+. Called a "re- boot" of the series instead of a se- quel to the sixth film, the plot of this newest Paranormal Activity film is being kept closely guarded. What we do know, however, is that this latest installment from Blumhouse Productions and Paramount Players continues with the franchise tradi- tion of a found-footage film style with an abundance of supernatural frights to keep you up at night. Directed by William Eubank ("The Signal," 2014), the screenplay rests in the hands of frequent Paranor- mal Activity writer Christopher Landon (who has written for every film in the franchise except for the first and sixth).
