TITANS Continued from page 1 Titans, Wildcats rematch in opening round of Sectionals By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern will travel back to Mt. Vernon for a rematch at 7 p.m. Friday in the first round of the football sectional. It is a trip they made just three weeks ago when they dismantled the then 6 -0 Wildcats, 54-6. It might have been the Titans' best per- formance of the year. Titan Coach Nick Hart praised his offense and defense following the game, noting they had put up 54 against a team that hadn't given up more than 17 in their previous six games. Mt. Vernon still hasn't allowed more than two touchdowns to anyone other than the Titans and South Spencer, who scored 17 during a 48 -17 blowout. Gibson Southern jumped out to a 21-0 lead early and never looked back. It was also a game they converted two third-and-long sit- uations with spectacular throws and catches. Coach Hart knows that isn't always going to happen and he knows teams have a way of bridging the gap from an in-season loss, come playoff time. "If you look at the last few years, we have lost pretty big early in the season and then came back to either win or play a really close game in the tournament." Examples include last year when South- ridge beat the Titans 48 -28 in week five, but only won 30 -27 in the sectional. It was a game Gibson Southern had a first down the red zone and didn't score, midway through the fourth quarter. Last year the Titans beat a young Heritage Hills team 38 -0 in Septem- ber, but then in the first round of the section- al it was a 21-10 win. In the 2019 season, Heritage Hills beat Gib- son Southern 49 -14 in September then in the sectional Heritage Hills won 21-20. The Pa- triots that year made it to the state finals be- fore losing to Indianapolis Chatard. Since Mt. Vernon lost to Gibson Southern on Oct. 1, they beat 7-2 North Posey, 42-14 and Washington 54-6. Mt. Vernon is led by their sophomore quar- terback who is a dual threat. He typically passes for about 150 yards a game and rushes for about 75 yards a game. Against the Titans he completed 10 of 16 passes for 80 yards and one touchdown, but was held to zero yards rushing on 10 carries. Gibson Southern was able to throttle the Wildcat running game, holding them to just 47 yards on 22 carries. Gibson Southern's offense comes in on a roll as they are averaging 43.7 points a game, while giving up just 13.6 points defensively. Titan quarterback Brady Allen is put- ting up historic numbers as he has passed for 2,311 yards and 35 touchdowns with- out throwing an interception. He currently stands at number eight on the Indiana all- time career passing list with 9,786 yards. Allen consistently completes passes to six or more receivers in a game. The has a quiv- er full of tall, fleet footed targets. His number one target has been Rory Heltsley who has caught 50 passes for 926 yards and 15 touch- downs this season. Other frequent targets for Allen are Kayden Hurless, Isaac O'Neal and Brayden Malone. The second-leading receiver prior to being injured in the game against Mt. Ver- non was Cole McKee. His status for the Mt. Vernon rematch is unknown. The running game has been there when they need it. With the tailback combination of Sean DeLong and Adrean Lukeman, they have proven they can get tough yards when they need them. That is evidence by the stat of zero punts against PAC teams this season. Gibson Southern will make the trip to Mt. Vernon knowing each time you play an oppo- nent, it get tougher, especially when you have to play them on the road both times. first quarter. Despite gaining a first down on an eight- yard pass and five-yard face mask penalty, the Pioneers ended up with one net yard on the series as a fumble cost them three yards and then Titan Ben Luttrell sacked Clay Conner for a 10 -yard loss. Gibson Southern took over on Boon- ville's 41-yard line. A 28 -yard pass to Heltsley gave the Titans a first down at the 13. Allen rolled out of the backfield to his left and went in for a score, but it was called back for a holding penalty and dead ball foul. They backed up the Titans to the 35 -yard line, leaving them facing first and 32. It didn't matter. Lukeman ran for 10 and Allen went for 13. Allen then hit Heltsley for his second touchdown of the night and Lukeman then scored his third two-point conver- sion, and Gibson Southern led 30 -0. They added a fifth touchdown for good measure with 5:58 left in the half. This one started and ended with DeLong. A f- ter a block in the back on first down, Gibson Southern was backed up to first and 20. A short pass to Delong preced- ed an 11-yarder to Heltsley, followed by a 22-yarder to Kaden Hurless and a 14-yarder to Heltsley, making it first and 10 at the 12. DeLong then took it in for his first score of the night and a 37-0 lead. Gibson Southern's starters stayed on the sidelines in the second half. Boonville scored with 6:40 left in the game on an 84-yard run by Wilder. The Titans reserves, led by quarter- back Tanner Boyd and Devan Roberts, put together a nice drive that stalled at the one-yard line. Boyd was the Titan's leading rusher with 53 yards on seven carries. Roberts was the Titan's second leading rusher with 49 yards on 10 car- ries. Most of their yards were against Boonville's defensive starters. The win pushed Gibson Southern's re- cord to 8 -1 and 6 -0 in the PAC. Allen has thrown for 2,311 yards and 35 touchdowns this season. His 188 yards gives Allen a career total of 9,786, which keeps him in 8th place on the all-time list. He is just 57 yards behind Carson Blair, of Southwood, from the Class of 2017. Titan quarterback Brady Allen releases a pass against Boonville. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns in heavy rain as the Titans won 37-6. Titan linebacker Levi Dickerson (43) runs over Boonville's quarterback Clay Conner for a big loss, during the Titans' 37-6 win Friday night. Titan senior Alex Holmes power hits the ball over the net for the score during the Gibson Southern sectional volleyball match against Evansville Bosse on Thursday, Oct. 14 at Her- itage Hills. Lauryn Adamson, Titan freshman, serves the ball back into play during the Gibson Southern sectional volley- ball match against Evansville Bosse on Thursday, Oct. 14 at Heritage Hills. Titan sophomore Kate Lamey pre- pares to serve the ball up and over the net during the sectional volleyball match. Rylee Johnson, Titan junior, power drives the ball back over the net during the Gibson Southern sectional volleyball match against Evans- ville Bosse on Thursday, Oct. 14 at Heritage Hills.
