Brainerd Dispatch • October 17 - 23, 2021 •19 By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON HBO MAX "Dune" (2021) Frank Herbert's critically acclaimed 1964 science-fiction novel comes to life in the new film "Dune," premiering in theaters and on HBO Max on Friday, Oct. 22. Directed by Oscar nominee Denis Villeneuve ("Blade Runner 2049," 2017) and featuring a screenplay by Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts ("Doctor Strange," 2016) and Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump," 1994), this new sci-fi epic will cover the events from the first half of Herbert's "Dune" novel, with a sequel planned to follow. Set in the far future, the film follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet, "Call Me by Your Name," 2017), a young man with a destiny bigger than he could ever imagine. Entrusted with the protection of spice, the most valuable element in the galaxy, Paul must travel to the planet Arrakis. Also known as Dune, Arrakis is the most danger - ous planet in the galaxy and the element's only source. Caught in a battle for power between malevo- lent forces, Paul travels with his father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac, "Inside Llewyn Davis," 2013), his father's concubine, Lady Jes- sica (Rebecca Ferguson, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," 2015), and their most trusted advisers on a mission that can only be won by those able to conquer their fears. This action-packed film's all-star cast is rounded out by Zendaya ("Spider-Man: Homecoming," 2017), Jason Momoa ("Aquaman," 2018), Stellan Skarsgård ("Good Will Hunting," 1997), Josh Brolin ("Avengers: Endgame," 2019), Stephen McKinley Henderson ("Fences," 2016), Javier Bardem ("Skyfall," 2012), Dave Bautista ("Guardians of the Galaxy," 2014) and David Dastmalchian ("The Dark Knight," 2008). "Women Is Losers" (2021) Rise up with the debut of "Women Is Losers," available to stream exclusively on HBO Max as of Monday, Oct. 18. In 1960s San Francisco, Celina Guerrera (Lorenza Izzo, "Once Upon a Time... In Hol- lywood," 2019) is an ordinary and once-promising Catholic schoolgirl. Tired of the smothering oppression of poverty and sexism, Celina sets out to forge a promising future for herself, overcoming societal barri- ers and setting new precedents for the time in which she lives. Bold, funny and honest, this film is a love letter to the women who inspired writer and director Lissette Felicia- no ("With Children," 2017) to make it. "Men always seem to end up on top," Janis Joplin sings in the 1967 song that gave the film its title, but Feliciano is giving audiences a story that turns that narrative around. WHAT'S NEW ON SHUDDER "The Boulet Brothers' Dra- gula: Search for the World's First Drag Supermonster" - Season 4 Tune in for a sickeningly good time when Season 4 of "The Boulet Brothers' Dragula: Search for the World's First Drag Supermonster" premieres on Shudder on Tuesday, Oct. 19. This Shudder original series invites 11 drag artists from around the world to compete in an all-out competition to become the world's next drag Supermonster and win the $100,000 grand prize. Celebrat- ing underground drag and alterna- tive drag art, the competition puts the competing artists through a se- ries of challenges designed to test their grasp of the show's funda- mental principals — drag, filth, hor- ror and glamour. Hosted by resident drag artists and horror aficionados the Boulet brothers, Dracmorda and Swanthula, this otherworldly competition show is based on the brothers' long-running nightclub competition of the same name. This season sees a whole host of talented new artists, including Jade Jolie, Astrud Aurelia, Bitter Betty, Formelda Hyde, HoSo Terra Toma, Koco Caine, La Zavaleta, Merrie Cherry and Sigourney Beaver. WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Locke & Key" – Season 2 Unlock the mysteries of Keyhouse with the Season 2 premiere of "Locke & Key" on Friday, Oct. 22, on Netflix. After the death of their father, Rendell (Bill Heck, "I'm Your Woman," 2020), Tyler (Connor Jessup, "American Crime"), Kinsey (Emilia Jones, "CODA," 2021) and Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott, "It," 2017) move to his father's mysterious family estate in Mas- sachusetts with their mother, Nina (Darby Stanchfield, "Scandal"). While there, they discover that they are the new keepers of keys that unlock doors in all sorts of magical ways — and unlock secrets as well. With all of the series' many twists and turns, the kids start to learn more about the origin of the keys as they fight against evil forces seeking to take advantage of them. Based on the comic book series by Joe Hill, this 10-episode second season comes from show creators Meredith Averill ("The Haunting of Hill House," 2018), Aron Eli Coleite ("Heroes") and Carlton Cuse ("Lost"). "Maya and the Three" Netflix takes a trip to Mesoamerica in the new children's computer-an- imated miniseries "Maya and the Three," debuting on the platform on Friday, Oct. 22. Warrior princess Maya (voiced by Zoe Saldana, "Guardians of the Galaxy," 2014) is celebrating her 15th birthday when everything changes. Given an ultimatum by the gods of the underworld to make up for her fam- ily's misdeeds or see the world as she knows it destroyed, Maya sets out to fulfil her personal prophecy. She sets out on a hunt for the three foretold warriors who will help her defeat the malevolent gods and save humanity. From director and writer Jorge R. WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "Invasion" Get out of this world with "Inva- sion," the new series from Apple TV+ launching Friday, Oct. 22. Inspired by H.G. Wells' 1898 novel "The War of the Worlds," this sci-fi drama takes place as humanity experiences the terrifying events surrounding a global alien inva- sion. This alien visitation threatens existence as we know it, and the series follows five ordinary people around the globe as they try to make sense of the chaos around them and events unfold in real time. This new drama comes from directors Amanda Marsalis ("Echo Park," 2014), Jamie Payne ("The Hour") and Jakob Verbruggen ("London Spy"), with writing by Andrew Baldwin ("The Take," 2016), Simon Kinberg ("Sherlock Holmes," 2009) and David Weil ("Solos"). WHAT'S NEW ON DISCOVERY+ "Introducing, Selma Blair" (2021) The highly anticipated new documentary "Introducing, Selma Blair" comes to discovery+ on Thursday, Oct. 21. Acclaimed actress Selma Blair, known for "Cruel Intentions" (1999), "Hell- boy" (2004), "Anger Manage- ment" and many more films and TV series, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis — an autoim- mune disease that has no cure — in 2018. This intimate and raw portrait of the actress follows her through the course of a year as she adjusts to her changing life, handles her career and has candid discussions surrounding beauty, disability and mortality. With her trademark sense of humor, Blair gives audiences an open look at her life as she learns to live with her disease and the monumental changes happening in her life. The documentary is directed by Rachel Fleit ("Surveillance Cinema") and executive produced by Cass Bird ("The Chaos Bruv Club!" 2018). "Crutch" (2020) Get an inside look at the life of Bill Shannon in the new documen- tary film "Crutch," streaming on discovery+ as of Monday, Oct. 18. Shannon, aka Crutch Master, is an award-winning dancer, skater and performance artist — on crutches. The documentary explores Bill's journey from angry skate punk to internationally recognized art- ist and dancer as he engages in discussions about chronic pain, assumptions about disabilities and ways to empower those who face similar challenges. Packed with candid conversations and incredible footage from Shannon's performances, the film is "an emotional story of a one-of-a-kind artist's struggle to be understood" (per CrutchDoc.com).
