JOE ORIGINS" (Oct. 19) (UPCOMING RELEASES) "Free Guy" "THE STAND" Dramatized previously in a well-reputed 1994 miniseries, Stephen King's saga received a major retelling last year on the streaming service that was CBS All Access at the time (and has been renamed Paramount+ since). The story proved, and still proves, to be unnervingly timely since it deals with a pandemic and its aftermath as opposing factions try to build a new civilization with those who survived. A distinctive-looking Whoopi Goldberg plays Mother Abagail, the inspiration for forces of good to make a stand against so-called "Dark Man" Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard), who intends to initiate a much more devastating version of the world. James Marsden, Greg Kinnear, Odessa Young, Amber Heard and Katherine McNamara also star in the remake, which is available on its own or in a two-pack that includes the earlier version featuring Rob Lowe, Gary Sinise, Ruby Dee, Molly Ringwald and Ed Harris. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray) "CLARICE: SEASON ONE" Though author Thomas Harris had continued the story of FBI agent Clarice Starling himself in his writings, this recent – and very dark – CBS series offers its own continuation of the cases of the heroine of "The Silence of the Lambs." Rebecca Breeds has the title role, as Starling is appointed to a task force where she can use the special knack she has for tracking serial killers. Michael Cudlitz ("The Walking Dead") and Kal Penn are among those playing her new colleagues, with Jayne Atkinson ("Criminal Minds") and Marnee Carpenter as two other characters brought over from "Lambs," Senator Ruth Martin and her daughter Catherine. The show seemed destined for a second season, on Paramount+ if not CBS, but rights issues ultimately got in the way and the drama ultimately had only one season. "Lambs" fans may note that, because of some of those rights matters, the name Hannibal Lecter isn't uttered here. ››› (Not rated: AS, P, V) "AUDREY HEPBURN 7-MOVIE COLLECTION" This Blu-ray set, celebrating one of the most iconic of all movie stars, is tied to the 60th anniversary of her performance as Holly Golightly in the Blake Edwards-directed "Breakfast at Tiffany's" – but several more of Hepburn's best also are included. "Roman Holiday" offered her first starring role and earned her an Oscar opposite Gregory Peck; as the title character in "Sabrina," she prompts a rivalry between wealthy brothers (Humphrey Bogart, William Holden); Hepburn goes the "epic" route with her then- husband Mel Ferrer in "War and Peace"; she plays an overnight star as a model, thanks to Fred Astaire, in "Funny Face"; she's reunited with Holden in "Paris When It Sizzles," appearing here for the first time on Blu-ray; and in the Oscar-honored "My Fair Lady," she's Eiiza Doolittle, the object of Professor Henry Higgins' (Rex Harrison) social experiment. ›››› (G, PG or unrated, varying by title: AS) "THE NEVERS: SEASON 1, PART 1" Imbued with a variety of special powers as the result of an event that's hard to explain, a number of women in late-19th-century London find themselves in danger in this HBO and HBO Max series. Two ladies played by Laura Donnelly and Ann Skelly become the guardians of the entire group, facing near-continual peril in the quest to survive. With series creator Joss Whedon among the executive producers, the show also features Olivia Williams, Amy Manson, Pip Torrens, Denis O'Hare, Nick Frost and Ben Chaplin. This set is comprised of the six episodes that initially were shown, and since the second half of Season 1 has yet to have its cable and streaming premiere (it's slated for next year), there's bound to be a "Part 2" edition coming to home video later. DVD extras: 20 "making- of" featurettes. ››› (Not rated: AS, V) (Also on Blu-ray and Digital) "SPACE JAM: A NEW LEGACY" One of the most anticipated movies to end up getting recent theatrical and streaming releases simultaneously, this sequel that again combines animation and live-action gives basketball icon LeBron James – also a producer of the film, and effectively replacing the original picture's Michael Jordan here – a central role. He and his young son (played by Cedric Joe) end up stuck in a digital world from which they can return only if the elder James captains a team of "Looney Tunes" characters, including the one and only Bugs Bunny, to a win over a virtual squad on a hoops court. As amazing as James has been throughout his career, he's never made moves quite like the ones that computer-generated enhancement enables him to do here ... but the same movie-magic agility goes for his cartoon opponents, too. Don Cheadle, Sonequa Martin-Green ("Star Trek: Discovery"), Ernie Johnson Jr. and Lil Rel Howery also are in the human cast. DVD extras: deleted scenes. ››› (PG: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and 4K Ultra HD) "Space Jam: A New Legacy" "I tried to convince them to shoot the show in New York, but I'm the only one on it who's from there, so I didn't have much pull." – Elizabeth Lail of "Ordinary Joe" on NBC, which is being filmed in Atlanta " to Y o s p " w A "I feel that this is really a binge-watching show.
