If you wish to participate in this event, bring your pet and join As- sociation for the Welfare of Animals on the Court Square of Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby on Octo- ber 3 at 6:30 pm. A minister will deliver the service and bestow a hands-on blessing, upon the pet owners' request, for animals whose tem- perament allows. (For the safety of all, your pet should be contained, or on a leash, and current on all vaccines.) Saint Francis of Assisi is known as the patron saint of animals, the environ- ment, was an Italian Cath- olic friar and preacher. He founded the men's Fran- ciscan Order, the women's Order of St. Clare, and the lay Third Order of Saint Francis. St. Francis is one of the most venerated reli- gious figures in history. In 1223, Francis ar- ranged for the first Christ- mas manger scene. In 1224, he received the stig- mata, making him the first person to bear the wounds of Christ's Passion. He died in 1226 while singing Psalm 141. On July 16, 1228, he was pronounced a saint by Pope Gregory IX. He is one of the two patrons of Italy (with Catherine of Siena), and it is customary for Catholic and Anglican churches to hold ceremo- nies blessing animals on his feast day of 4 October, but the event may be cel- ebrated at any time of the year.
