Mark Wade, Deacon FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH 1400 E. Main Street Petersburg 812-354-6775 Sunday morning worship at 10 :30 a.m. Everyone is welcome to come share God's good news with our community of faith. The Need for Community The Covid pandemic has clearly had many negative im- pacts on our lives. Certainly, death has been tragic, tak- ing the lives of many loved ones. In addition to the obvi- ous health crisis, many other effects have changed our lives. From wearing masks to social distancing, Covid has altered plans and lives. Further impacts have been those that have affected us so- cially and psychologically. One of the most devastating results has been the impact on "com- munity." Not just the commu- nity of our city, county, region, or country, but "community" that has always allowed us to casually come together to share life happenings; birth- days, weddings, memorial services, civic groups and, of course, church. The Bible refers to this kind of church "community" as fellowship. The church has for centuries been one of the major outlets in our lives that has allowed and promoted this "koinonia" fellowship, a more in-depth participation in one another's lives. Hopefully, the worst is be- hind us. Hopefully, we will soon be free to gather in larg- er groups without concern. Hopefully, the devastating effects of the pandemic will come to an end. Our world needs community. At First Christian church, we come together on the first day of the week to worship and praise our loving God. It is our VINCENT CHRISTIAN CHURCH 8264 E. State Rd. 56 Morning worship and the Lord's supper at 9:30 a.m.; Sunday school at 10 :30 a.m.; evening worship at 6:30 p.m. Evening topic—"Put your faith into action." We will be meet- ing in accordance to some so- cial distancing and face masks. Also, there is a preaching rally at Camp Illiana this weekend. You are welcome to worship and fellowship with us. Our Giving "It has been said that the Christian should give till it hurts, but the Bible teaches the Christian should give till it feels good." The Apostle Paul wrote about giving, "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will al- so reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or un- der compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (II Corinthi- ans 9:6 -7). Because He Lives. Howev- er, he was miraculously de- livered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bish- op of Edessa in modern Tur- key. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully. 5 -Peter, He was crucified upside down on an X —shaped cross. According to church tradition, it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way Jesus Christ had died. 6 - James, the leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred foot down from the southeast pin- nacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived his fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club. This was the same pinnacle where Sa- tan had taken Jesus during temptation. 7-James, the son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus had called him to a life- time of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was beheaded at Jerusalem. Later, the officer walked be- side James to the place of ex- ecution. Overcome by convic- tion, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian. 8 - Phillip, Not really sure but some say he was mar- tyred. "Occasionally one's heart is cheered by the discovery of some insatiable saint who is willing to sacrifice everything for the sheer joy of experienc- ing God in increasing intima- cy. To such we offer this word of exhortation: Pray on, fight on, sing on. Do not underrate anything God may have done for you heretofore. Thank God for everything up to this point, but do not stop here. Press on into the deep things of God. In- sist upon tasting the profound- er mysteries of redemption. Keep your feet on the ground, but let your heart soar as high as it will. Refuse to be average or to surrender to the chill of your spiritual environment. If you thus "follow after," heaven will surely be opened to you and you will, with Ezekiel, see visions of God"—A.W.
