B-4 Wednesday, September 29, 2021 The Press-Dispatch Lady Chargers suffer loss to Lady Titans By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central Lady Charger soccer team played Gibson Southern, a team ranked in the state top 20, on Thursday, September 23. Ac- cording to Head Coach Chad Western, Gibson Southern has a great team record and have beaten a lot of teams by quite a bit. Currently, the Ti- tans are 11-2 overall and 8 -1 in the conference, making them first in the pocket. The Lady Chargers put forth that strong defensive effort all night, keeping the Titans from doing what they wanted on the field for the first half of the game and in- to the second half. Come the second half, the score was still 0 -0 until, with about 28 min- utes left on the clock, the Ti- tans scored their first goal. The Lady Chargers went on the offensive with about 12 minutes left in the game and Gibson Southern scored another goal as the Chargers were attacking. In the last few seconds of the game, against the very tired Chargers, the Titans scored the final goal, leaving the score 3-0. Coach Western said, "This match did not feel like a 3-0 score, as it was 1-0 until the last few minutes of the game. So many girls played well and so hard for us. We were very proud of the effort against a very strong team." Coach Western went on to give praise to Alli Holder, Kee- na Young, Lillian Thompson, Jaylynn Capehart and Mallo- ry Hunt for being up for the challenge on defense, and to Albany Ashley, Kahle Young, Hannah Woodford, Kennedy Willis, Beth Edrington and Rachel Goeppner for holding down the midfield and playing very well. He also stated Lain- ey Leighty, Abby Skelton, Lil- lian Nalley, Jasmine Leighty and Grace Robling deserved praise for a big effort on of- fense throughout the match. A fter playing South Spen- cer and winning 2-2 on Satur- day, September 25, the Pike Central girls' soccer team is currently 6 -6 overall, with a 5 -4 conference record, mak- ing them sixth in the pocket. Their next game will be against Princeton Communi- ty in the sectional at Jasper. The Princeton Tigers are cur- rently ranked 11th in the pock- et, with a 3-10 overall record and 1-9 in the conference. Pictured above is the 2021-22 Pike Central girls' soccer team.
