Page 8 September 2021 News apps no longer have to give Apple cut of subscription revenue they generate News in Brief After a month of negotiating collectively under authorization from the ACCC, with the loom- ing threat of forced arbitration, Australian news organization Country Press Australia (CPA), which includes over 180 regional and local publications across the country, struck a deal with Google. According to Mumbrella, 70 of CPA's publications will appear in the Google News Showcase, and Google will pay CPA to curate content for the program. News Media Alliance President & CEO, David Chavern, stated, "This deal shows the real power of the Australian Bargaining Code – collective bargaining for small publishers that had no abil- ity to get compensation otherwise, backed by arbitration. Through receiving fair compensation from the platforms, news publishers can continue to reinvest in producing the high-quality journalism that the world needs now more than ever." Chavern continued, "The Journalism Competition & Preservation Act (JCPA) would provide news publishers here in the U.S. a similar ability to col- lectively negotiate with the big tech platforms for fair compensa- tion for use of their content. The JCPA is the best solution for local publishers to be able to continue the critically important work they do of keeping the public informed on the issues and events impacting their local communities. The cost of inaction, in terms of the spread of misinformation we are all experiencing, is simply too great to ignore any longer." —News Media Alliance News publishers get deal in Australia; JCPA would give U.S. publishers similar ability to negotiate A new policy change by the tech giant will make it possible for news organizations to sign up new subscribers in their iPhone or iPad apps without giving Apple a dime of the rev- enue they generate. Schurz was a leader in local U.S. journalism and a global champion of press freedom and of the need to intro- duce youth to how good reporting is done. "Scott Schurz was a legend- ary presence in our organization over so many years," said Andrew Heslop, WAN-IFRA media free- dom executive director. Schurz Press Freedom honor awarded to teachers in the U.S., Bolivia and Nigeria Kokomo-based newspaper website design company 1up! sold to epublishing Kokomo-based 1up! has been purchased by ePublishing, a leader in software as a service content management system for online publications. 1up! provides web-based CMS software and hosting to newspaper publishers and other organizations. It was originally established in the 1990s by John Nixon of Nixon Newspapers and John DePrez, former pub- lisher of the Shelbyville News. "This exciting new relationship has many ben- efits that will address your business needs," said J. David McChesney in an email to clients. McChesney is a co-founder and managing part- ner of 1up!, and is now director of publisher engagement.
