Poplar Street, Petersburg Soccer defeats Mt. Vernon in penalty kicks By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central boys' soc- cer team played Mount Vernon on their home field Tuesday, Septem- ber 14, winning after a fight in pen- alty kicks. According to Head Coach Jacob Western, this was a big conference win to a really good conference team. In the beginning of the first peri- od, the Chargers hit the field play- ing skillfully and scoring in the first 10 minutes off of a free kick by Pike Central junior Nolan Nelson. Junior Joey Ridao got a head on the ball, af- ter Nelson's kick, followed by senior Devin Carlisle getting in behind the defense and sinking the ball into the net for a nice finish to the play, mak- ing the score 1-0 Chargers' lead. At about 20 minutes in, Mount Vernon returned the call by scoring their first point of the game, leaving the score locked at 1-1. From this point on, the Chargers took control of the ball, keeping pos- session throughout the biggest part of the game. Coach Western commented, "We had a lot of chances, but weren't able to score." Pike Central's sophomore Chase Ridao, senior Ashton Evans, soph- omore Cade Morgan and Xavier Shoultz rocked out the defense all game against some good goal scor- ers. While junior goalie Peyton Howald took possession of the goal, tallying 10 saves during the game. They shot a team 378, which was good enough for third place in the North Knox Sectional and advances them to the Washington Regional. "I was ecstatic. If you had told me at the beginning of the year we would shoot that score. . . they have improved a lot more than I anticipated they would. Sophie im- proved 17 strokes," said Charger head coach Jarrod Gideon. "That is the best we have played. I was really proud of them. They knew we had a chance to get out, so they were really nervous. If you would have seen them tee off on the first hole, you would have thought we have no chance. But they settled down and played well." Senior Charger Sophie Carnah- an placed second overall individ- ually in the event, with her best 18 -hole score of her career. Carna- han shot an 80 at the High Pointe Golf Club, formerly known as the Bicknell Country Club. She blis- tered the front nine, shooting a 36. She made four on each of her first four holes to be one over. A bogey on hole five put her at two over, but then she birdied the par three sixth hole and the par five seventh to get back to even. A bogey on the par four ninth put her at one over 36. "She was on fire," said Gideon. A couple of sevens on the back nine put her at 44 for an even 80 on her round. Only Trinity Dubbs, of South Knox, carded a better score. Dubbs was medalist with a 71. South Knox won the team event with a 350. Vincennes Rivet was second with a 362 and Pike Cen- tral's 378 put them in third place, two strokes ahead of Barr Reeve at 380. It was an important two strokes, because third place advances to the Washington Regional at Coun- try Oaks. "We have had some pretty good girls' golf teams and that is the sec- ond best score we have ever shot in sectional," said Gideon. "I have been coaching for 15 or 16 years and this team has improved more than any team I've ever coached." Charger senior Sydney Loveless shot a 94, as she had a 47 on both the front and back nine. "Sydney Loveless came in big for us. By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central Chargers played the Wash- ington Hatchets Friday, September 17. Wash- ington is currently 0 -4 overall and 0 -1 in the conference, making them sixth in the PAC. In the last game the Chargers played against the Hatchets, the Chargers lost by a score of 44- 21. Before this season, the Chargers have not won a game against Washington since 2004, winning that game 21-7 in August of that year. The stands were full of fans for this game, which included many of the student body, who were participating in a whiteout, there to sup- port the Chargers and cheer them on to a win. In the first quarter of the game, junior full- back/linebacker Jagar Dent got hurt, limping off the field. Pushing on, Pike Central contin- ued to fight for the win. With 4:54 on the score- board in the first quarter, the Chargers' se- nior halfback Wyatt Frasure scored Pike Cen- tral's first touchdown of the season. Following that up, junior Braden Howald made the car- ry through for the PAT, making the score 8 -0 Pike Central's lead in the first quarter. Dent returned to the game in the second quarter to help his team with the win, and that he did. With 4:41 left on the board, Dent caught an interception, making it Pike Cen- tral's ball. The Chargers continued to press and fight through the quarter to win. At the very last possible second of the quarter, Char- ger freshman quarterback Matthew Meadows threw a 27-yard pass to Julian Gish, who took the ball in for the touchdown. At the sound of the buzzer for halftime, the Chargers went for the PAT scoring with a run in by Howald, leaving the score at 16 -0 at the end of the sec- ond quarter. CHARGERS DEFEAT THE HATCHETS
