Poplar Street, Petersburg PIKE CENTRAL GIRLS' SOCCER DEFEATS PRINCETON By Matthew Haycraft Lady Charger soccer defeated the Princeton Tigers by a score of 1-0 in a heated game. According to Head Coach Chad Western, the team started out kind of shaky the first few minutes and had a couple of chances left open in the first half for the Tigers to score, but as the game went on, their de- fense got stronger. The Chargers kept up the fight and did not leave many chances open for Princeton to take advantage of in the second half. A fter a grueling first half, the score remained 0 -0. With 15 minutes left on the clock in the second half, Pike Central junior Keena Young scored the first goal of the game, with an assist from freshman Jay- lyn Capehart. Coach Western wrapped up the game, saying, "Princeton is al- ways a good match-up. Several girls played well, including: Alli Holder, Albany Ashley, Abby Skelton, Han- nah Woodford, Mallory Hunt, Jaylyn Capehart and Lillian Thompson." The Pike Central girls' soccer team also played Forest Park on Sat- urday, September 11 and lost 0 -4. A f- ter this loss, the Lady Chargers are now 4-2 overall, with a conference re- Cross Country Chargers place second at Prides Creek By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central Chargers cross country boys' and girls' teams both placed second at Prides Creek on Tuesday, September 9 in a four-way meet against South Knox, North Daviess and Washington. The Charger boys had seven fin- ishers out of 25 in the boys' divi- sion. They placed second with a total point tally of 65. Their fin- ishers were junior Peyton Chan- ley placing seventh with a time of 19:40 ; freshman Blaine Barnett placing 11th with a time of 20 :07; sophomore Jeremy Delobel plac- ing 14th with a time of 20 :58; ju- nior Dallas Reutepohler placing 16th with a time of 21:34; sopho- more Shane Woodhall placing 17th with a time of 21:37; freshman Ty- ler DeCoursey placing 24th with a time of 26:04; and freshman Car- ter Blackwell placing 25th with a time of 28:16. The Lady Chargers had six fin- ishers out of 25. They placed sec- ond with a point total of 44. La- dy Charger finishers were fresh- man Xavery Weisman placing first with a time 20 :10 ; senior Quinlan Teague placing seventh with a time of 23:07; sophomore Anna White- head placing eighth with a time of 23:11; junior Kennedy Willis plac- ing tenth with a time of 23:25; freshman Kaylyn Warner placing 19th with a time of 25:59; and se- nior Morgan Anderson placing 21st Volleyball places third at Central Tourney By Matthew Haycraft The Pike Central girls played at the Evansville Central Invite on Saturday, September 11, winning their pool and placing third over- all. They ended up winning two and losing two. For the first game, the team played Evansville Bosse, winning in three sets, scoring 25 -19, 13-25, 15 -9. Charger senior Jaize Mills had seven aces, two kills and 17 digs; sophomore Lexie Onyett had 12 digs and one ace; sophomore Haylie Fulcher had two aces, four kills and one dig; and sophomore Karley Kavanaugh had 12 assists, one ace and two kills. Head Coach Stephanie Shedd stated, "( We) started off a little slow and got behind in the sec- ond set. However, we played hard in the third set and pulled out the victory." In game two of the tourney, the Lady Chargers played Evansville Central, winning in the third set by a score of 20 -18. Vinnedge ended the game with four aces, five kills and four blocks, while Onyett had 11 digs. The team as a whole had 27 digs and eight ac- es for the game, not to mention the great serving and passing the team did, according to Coach Shedd. "We fought to win this game and really showed our will to persevere. In all three sets, both teams battled back and forth. The score proves how hard the ladies played on the court. They were mentally tough, pulling out the win in the third set. We would get ahead by one, then Central would get back on top. It went back and forth like that un- til we finished it at the end by play- ing as a team and playing smart." For the third game of the tour- ney, the Lady Chargers played Gib- son Southern and lost 23-25, 21-25. According to Coach Shedd, the game was very close and the girls were in the match the entire time. They just couldn't pull ahead and got stuck in a few rotations, letting too many points add up in a row. Consistency leads to Lady Chargers' victory By Andy Heuring Pike Central's girls' golf won an- other match Thursday, as they beat South Spencer 197 to 208. "We played well against South Spencer. It seems we are becom- ing a lot more consistent from top to bottom in our lineup," said Char- ger Coach Jarrod Gideon. Lady Charger seniors Sophie Carnahan and Sydney Loveless led the way for the Chargers, with both shooting 47s. Both made par on three holes enroute to their 47s. Chloe Wil- liams was the other Lady Charger to break 50, with a 49. Freshman Brailey Mills carded a 54 for the other Charger on the team score of 197. South Spencer's number one player won medalist honors with a 44, but she was the only player to break 50 for South Spencer. Pike Central will compete in the North Knox Sectional on Saturday at High Pointe Country Club (for- merly known as Bicknell Country Club). The Chargers were at 0 -1 for the season after falling to South Spen- cer last week by a score of 55 -0. Al- so prior to this game, Pike Central was ranked 241st overall and 54th in class 3A. Southridge Raiders are ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A. They are one of the top two teams in the PAC so far, averaging 260 yards on the ground rushing and pow- ering through with their dominat- ing offense. They have been on a roll the last four or so years, with a state championship and making it to semi-state a year ago. This game was going to be rough for Pike Central, but if the last game tells us anything, it is that the Chargers keep their heads up and keep on fighting. In school history, Southridge has had 43 wins over Pike Central, with the Chargers having four wins against them, the last one being in 1990. The last time the Chargers faced the Raiders was last year on Friday, September 11, when the Chargers lost by a score of 58 -0. Two senior players, Wyatt Fra- sure, middle linebacker/halfback, and Sammy Coleman, noseguard/ backup fullback, along with Julian Gish, sophomore, wide-receiver and punter, were back in action this week after being quarantined last week during the game against South Spencer. In the first quarter, Southridge scored the first touchdown with 8:50 on the scoreboard, with a six- yard run and a good kick. Raiders went on to score three more touch- downs and good kicks for the quar- ter, one of them being a 56 -yard
