Sweet's Column By Barb Sweet child is going to partici- pate in without their in- put will stifle their crea- tivity and erode the feel- ing they have some con- trol over their own lives. Creating positive con- ditions of self-worth is ex- tremely vital to the develop- ment of children with learn- ing and thinking differenc- es as well. Giving children with all abilities the skills to recognize their strengths helps boost self-worth and makes for a successful childhood and future. In the words of American ab- olitionist Frederick Dou- glass, "It is easier to build strong children than to re- pair broken men." Abby Betz, LSW, is the Youth First Social Work- er at Holy Trinity Catholic Schools, Washington Catho- lic Elementary School, and Washington Catholic Mid- dle/High School in Daviess and Dubois Counties. Over 60,000 youth and families per year are served by Youth First's school social work and af- ter school programs that pre- vent substance abuse, pro- mote healthy behaviors and maximize student success. If you would like your name and birthday added to our list, send in a postcard or a note. Winslow Patoka River was up to its banks, but has dropped a little since the rain storms have passed. Some of our neighbors have lost a tree or half a tree. The peach tree came up roots and all, and fell over. It's been planted again. Half of a big tree fell into the next yard and on that tree, I heard it fall, like a big limb, not a half tree falling. The Rose of Sharons in purple and pink are bloom- ing, and I saw a new burgundy bloom, then some white flowers. Black-eyed Su- sans look attractive this year, with more of Grandmother's flowers showing their colors. Our squirrel, the young one, is still using his teeth to litter the front yard with clumps of cut leaves. The grass has grown higher with the moisture from the humidity at night. The humidity ar- rived on Tuesday and stayed high over the weekend of July 23, with a 105 de- gree heat index. As of Friday, July 16, starting after 3 p.m., there was only one part-time worker for the Town of Winslow. Nathan left and Norm took his retirement early. So, if you see Terry Bolin around town, remember he is only part-time help and he will do the best he can. I'm happy for Nathan and Norm, who have been the only workers for over a year, with no extra help. They have kept Winslow in great shape and al- so kept the roads to where they needed to be. They have fixed several broken wa- ter lines, made sure when the rains came in with force that the lift stations were still ok. They had to check the lagoons to make sure the balance was acceptable. Their mowing and weedeating was great as you would see their work all over town. There were other great things they have done that wasn't part of their jobs and they were great helpers. Nathan is on to better things with his family and we all wish him well. Norm is resting his bones and enjoying this time of retirement. Con- grats to Nathan and Norm. Marshal Steve Nelson and Deputy James Harrington caught the guy who broke into the Winslow Liquor store. We have two fine police officers in our town who did a great job as they protect our citizens. We are so grateful. Our truck, Ava was taken to have her back brakes replaced at a new place for us in Campbelltown. Ava has sat for the whole week. Last Monday, she got some new brakes and I'm really happy, because she is the truck I can get into easy. Vernon was a help as he was our ride both times. We were early to pick her up, so we all ate at a restaurant in Oakland City. We got to the repair shop in time to see Ava on the road, but it was odd to not see Norm in the driver's seat. We talked to one of the own- ers and then we were on the road again. Front brakes are next and we appreciate the great job the repairs shop did. I had said when we got Ava on the road, we were going somewhere, so we took a drive to see Terri and Ted, where Mom has been visiting. Everyone is ok and doing great, and Mom had her toenails clipped by Laura. Her feet feel great now. The next day, we decided to go some- where, so we drove on Hwy. 41 from Princeton, past the big Santa Claus wav- ing at us near Evansville, past the con- struction on the bridge by Diamond Ave. Then we crossed the twin bridges over the Ohio River. We saw one speed boat and lots of barges docked along the banks, and the river was up. We drove through Henderson, and took Hwy 41/ I-69 past lots of farmlands. It is a nice highway to travel on as we passed sever- al towns like Dixon, Calhoun and more to arrive in Madisonville. We got gas there for $2.79 a gallon. A fterwards, we saw part of the town as we drove back home. But we took I-69 to Oakland City. It was a hot day, but a beautiful drive just to get away. In Indiana, on Hwy 56, from PC-1 junc- tion to Otwell junction, you can now drive on smooth pavement and it feels great not to go over bumps in the road. It is now the only smooth road in Pike County. We hope Hwy 64 is done soon. On our way to go grocery shopping, we drove past the 57 Bones family, where a net is set up, and Mom, Dad and the two youngsters are playing volleyball, with the ball in the air near the net. A fter shop- ping, we paid our bills and got something to eat at the Jasper River Park, where the Patoka is high, but had gone down a lit- tle, with the marks on the trees hanging over the river. Daniel, Kyana and a friend, D.J., stopped by for a visit and as they went for a ride with Norm, they saw Tim and Jeanette, and the animals, Greg, and then James Harrington. Susie Doublemont stopped by for a while as we got caught up on things. I waved at several people who were sitting out on a lovely day in Pike County. As the lights begin to dim for this week, keep an eye on family and friends, just to be sure they are keeping cool in this high heat. Slow down and enjoy your neck of the woods. Stay safe through these COVID outbreaks. As always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. SATURDAY, JULY 31 • 10am EDT at the Auction Barn – 2667 E.
