AUGUST 2010 – It's A Good Life Support the Neal Senior Center – Let Us Count The Ways The Cleveland County Council on Aging/Leona Smith Neal Senior Center is a private non-profit orga- nization. The Senior Center relies on the generosity of our good neighbors, friends, area businesses, and participants through a variety of donation types to help keep our doors open, the power on, as well as maintain programs, activities and services for adults age 55 and above. Some of the types of donations you may be familiar with are our Annual Membership Drive (current- ly taking place.) and donating items/goods directly to the Senior Center: The Senior Center accepts many types of items from non-perish- able food stores to stock the Food Pantry to household items for the annual Flea Market as well as exercise equipment, computer equip- ment and most anything that comes to mind. Clothing and shoes in excellent con- dition can be donated to the new “Yours and Mine” Consignment Shop. Donations made to U.A. Thrift in the Senior Center’s name. The Senior Center and Council on Aging receive a small portion of the funds raised from the sales of items donated to U.A. Thrift in the name of the Senior Center. U.A. Thrift is a great place to donate clothes, shoes and household items. Donate old Cell phones and empty ink/toner car- tridges to the Senior Center for recycling. only the Senior Center but the environment as well. makes great Help not It “green” sense. The Senior Center receives some funds from each cell phone or ink/toner cartridge that is recycled through our office. Over 200 million Americans have a cell phone. Americans buy a new cell phone on an average of every 9 – 18 months. Continued recycling and reuse of cell phones substan- tially reduces the number of phones manufactured glob- ally every year. Most businesses have printers, copiers and fax machines, which use toner and ink cartridges. recycling and reuse helps the environment. Donation of Time and Talent: The Senior Center could not operate without the many volunteers that pro- vide help in areas such as: The Twisted Spoon Media Center; Delivering meals; Special Events; Daily activi- ties; Cobwebs ‘N Confetti Gift Shop, instructors for classes, plus a slew of other areas. Volunteers are always needed and greatly appreci- ated. If you have some time on your hands and want to give back to the community, there’s no better place to vol- unteer than at the Neal Senior Center (we might be a tiny bit biased, but it is a great place to volunteer.) Employment, financial and legal affairs, housing arrangements, and even meal preparation are all situations that present new challenges for both the men and women. In handling these altered circumstances, many people around the country are finding an important source of support and guid- ance in voluntary support programs, which put them in touch with others who have themselves, experienced similar situations. The Cleveland County Council on Aging/Senior Center has both a Ladies Support Group and a Men’s Support Group for persons 55 years of age or older. These groups provides a variety of programs that deal with such topics as caring for your car, depression, cooking for one, self-protection and health information. It is a great way to learn new stuff and socialize with people in your community. Coping with life after the death or divorce of a loved one becomes even more difficult as one realizes and deals with unfamiliar activities and loneliness. If you are alone in Cleveland County, you are welcome to become a part of the learning and growing process we offer. The Ladies Group meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Senior Center at 11:30 for lunch. The Men’s group meets second Thursday of each month at 2:30 at the COA/Senior Center. Please bring a friend to the meetings with you. For further information please call Kathy Cobb at the Senior Center at 704-482-3488. Cleveland DURING YOUR TIME OF NEED We invite comparison...
