One lesson that Jesus would teach us is to have confidence that God answer every true petition. Skeptics may ques- tion it, humanists may deny it, and intellectuals may ridi- cule it. Yet here is Christ's own promise: "If you abide in me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you" ( John 15:7). Does this mean God gives us a blank check, so to speak, when we pray? Does He prom- ise to give us anything we want, if we keep asking? No God loves us too much to an- swer prayers that are foolish or might harm us. But the clos- er we get to Him- -the more we abide in Him and His word abides in us- -the more we de- sire what He desires, and the more our prayers will reflect His will.
