Poplar Street, Petersburg "Paul…an apostle of Jesus Christ, accord- ing to…the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness" (Tit. 1:1). There's a reason why Paul says he was made an apostle according to "the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness." It is be- cause if you're after godliness in your life, that is, if godliness is your life's goal, you need to follow the truth that is after godliness. Now, the truth that is after godliness used to be the Law of Moses. Under the Law, if you kept the sabbath, and kept Israel's seven feasts, and didn't eat unclean foods, and did all the other things the Law demanded of you, you were godly. But the Law is not the truth that So many times since the pandemic of COVID-19, I have heard the familiar state- ment, "My faith brought me through." Faith in God is our greatest asset in life. It is always safer to believe than not to believe. There are hurts, disappointments and times of sorrow that makes us think about God. According to a Gallup Poll, nine out of ten Americans believe there is a God who loves them. Most believe God is active in their lives. Most people receive a great deal of comfort and strength from their faith. The key to knowing God is faith. God is more than a philosophical concept or some impersonal force in our universe. By faith, God enters the lives of human beings and does listen to their prayers. Those with- out Christian faith often feel lonely and have no hope for the future. I believe in God because even the scientists cannot supply the final link in the chain of how we came to be and why we are here. You can leave the final link to chance or ascribe the role of creation to God. I believe that where there is a design, there is a de- signer. That designer is a loving, caring, forgiv- ing, and eternal God. I have faith in God because I have witnessed His power in my life and in the lives of count- less people. Faith is an anchor in the midst of life's storms. Faith gives us direction when we lose our way. Faith in God gives comfort when we lose a family member or good friend. To dis- believe takes more faith than to believe in God. Our faith becomes our hope in what seems to be a hopeless world. We won't know one day from another. I've heard when you retire you should have seven Saturdays, but I haven't seen this to be true. I haven't seen but one thing difficult with retirement and that is you seem to never have cash in your billfold. You might have money in the bank, but it seems you never get time to get cash. It seems as though I never run out of chores to keep me busy here on our North forty. But here is a good thing about retirement, if it doesn't get done there isn't anyone to get onto you about not getting it done. One of our biggest chores is keep- ing the limbs picked up from the yard and that chore seems never-ending. There was a couple of nights last week I didn't sleep very well at all. That is very strange for me because I always sleep like a log. I know one night was because I wanted to make a phone call early in the morning and I was concerned about over sleeping. I made the call and went to sleep for awhile. The other night of sleeplessness oc- curred because after sleeping in a king-size bed on vacation, it was hard not to spread out and keep your spouse from sleeping. Having an ex- tra bed is coming in handy for us lately. I'm writing this on Sunday the Fourth but you won't read it until Wednesday, when the mail comes to your box. People tell me my article or column, which ever, is one of the first things they look for. I am happy to hear this, but I don't under- stand how a bunch of jumbled up thoughts would be that interesting. I simply sit down and write what's on my mind and sometimes my mood shows by what and how I say things. Speak Positively Positive self-talk is not a new concept; it is a Scriptur- al one. Paul writes, "Fix your thought on what is true, hon- orable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable, things that are ex- cellent and worthy of praise." Here are three ways you can do that: 1. Avoid comparisons— Each of us have a different skill set. You are unique. 2. Tack on hope. The Bi- ble says, "Even when there was no reason for hope, Abra- ham kept on believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, "That's how ma- ny descendants you will have" (Romans 4:18). 3. Act positively to actually become positive. In Winning the Stress Challenge, Dr. Nick Hall cites a study confirming that signals transmitted to a person's brain when they are behaving a certain way pro- voke similar physical and men- tal changes to those elicited by real emotional responses. In other words, putting on a hap- py face can truly make you feel happier. "Finally, brother, whatev- er is true, whatever is honor- able, whatever is just, whatev- er is pure, whatever is love- ly, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things" (Philippians 4:8). Your pres- ence will be appreciated and I'm sure you will feel the bless- ing of God. "My God shall supply all your need" (Philippians 4:19). One lesson that Jesus would teach us is to have confidence that God answers every true petition. Skeptics may ques- tion it, humanists may deny it and intellectuals may ridicule it. Yet here is Christ's own promise: "If you abide in me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire and it shall be done for you" ( John 15:7). Does this mean God gives us a blank check, so to speak, when we pray? Does He prom- ise to give us anything we want, if we keep asking? No, God loves us too much to an- swer prayers that are foolish or might harm us. But the clos- er we get to Him, the more we abide in Him and His word abides in us, the more we de- sire what He desires, and the more our prayers will reflect His will.
