Dumbest of all is that while Congress ladles out trillions of dollars into new corporate welfare programs, we now have bipartisan bills to break up "monopolistic" big tech companies, including Am- azon, Apple, Facebook and Google. These firms have market capitalization of more than $ 6 trillion, employ hun- dreds of thousands of Amer- ican workers, and arguably do more to spur American in- novation than all the govern- ment programs in the histo- ry of the United States. Deese is dead wrong. Chi- na and its communistic eco- nomic system will not out- compete the United States in the 21st century unless we are dumb enough to tax our own successful compa- nies, break them up if they are "too successful" and de- stroy our domestic energy industry. If politicians de- cide where investment dol- lars are going, we will soon be paying for hundreds of bankrupt Solyndras and our tech leadership really will be in mortal peril. Washington is a much greater threat to American supremacy right now than China. Stephen Moore is a senior fellow at the Heritage Founda- tion and an economic consul- tant with FreedomWorks. He is the co-author of "Trumpo- nomics: Inside the America First Plan to Revive the Amer- ican Economy." WELFARE Continued from page 4 equal.' This is the part of the Declaration of Independence that serves as an indict- ment against us! Do we really believe that everyone is created equal? John Wesley the founder of Method- ism, lived during the 1700s and preached against slavery. He supported the aboli- tionists. In 1774 Wesley published some thoughts upon Slavery in "A Collection of Religious Tracts." He declared that the institution of slavery is at its core dehu- manizing and barbarous. In 1852, abolitionist Frederick Douglas raised the question as to what A fricans in America on July 4th had to celebrate because they were enslaved. In 1858 Lincoln gave his famous House Divided Speech. "A house divid- ed against itself, cannot stand." He said, 'I believe this government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.' In 1861, tensions boiled over, and America descended into civil war. It was 1863 when Abraham Lincoln began his speech with the Words, 'Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedi- cated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that na- tion, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.' Lincoln real- ized that America, a nation conceived in 'liberty,' was in peril. America emerged from its civil war with slavery abolished yet badly bruised. The Union was pre- served. Liberty for everyone still had a chance. America has reached another peril- ous point in time. We are facing a mo- ment of tremendous cultural pain and civ- il unrest. Can America continue as a na- tion in which countless people are divid- ed along political, racial, economic, and cultural lines to name a few? Racial ten- sions have boiled over and created move- ments to defund the police. Consequent- ly, in large cities crime has skyrocketed. Cancel culture is being used as a weap- on to silence free speech and gainful de- bate on critical issues facing America. Critical race theory has become a divi- sive discourse that pits people of color against white people. Black Lives Mat- ter has stoked the fire of racial tensions to the point where entire neighborhoods have been torched by "peaceful" demon- strators. Sporting events, concerts, and award ceremonies have turned into so- cial protest venues. The Bible reminds us in John 8:34 'Ver- ily, verily, I say to you — Everyone who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin.' Therein is the problem and likewise is the solution. Everyone is a slave to sin; therefore, everyone needs delivered. De- liverance is found in John 8:31-32"If you abide in my word, you are truly my dis- ciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." Within the teachings of Christ is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. The prescription out of this dilemma is found in Isaiah 1:18 "Come. Sit down. Let's argue this out." This is GOD's Mes- sage: "If your sins are blood-red, they'll be snow-white. If they're red like crim- son, they'll be like wool." The basis here is everyone shares blame and responsi- bility. The only solution is to sit down, and everyone confess and take owner- ship of their shortcomings. Then we can have a constructive discussion on how we can live together in liberty and freedom. The alternative is more of the same. bribing the cops. Later it was revealed that the police in the permit department were giv- ing out permits for money. Scams like that thrive whenever politicians impose too many restrictions on peo- ple's freedom. In parts of Cal- ifornia, people got gun per- mits if they donated to a sher- iff's campaign. It's one more reason why Gottlieb is excited about this new Supreme Court case. Court watchers pre- dict his side will win, espe- cially because there are now more originalist judges on the court. That means it's likely that soon, almost all Americans will be legally able to carry guns. Some people say that will be terrible. "Women are less safe! " says professor Lisa Moore of the University of Texas on T V. "Every vulnerable pop- ulation, LGBT people, stu- dents of color, has more to fear! " But then why are 58 % of new gun owners Blacks, and 40 % women? "An awful lot of wom- en bought a firearm to pro- tect themselves and feel a whole lot safer! " says Gottli- eb. "Eight hundred thousand times a year, a person uses a firearm to protect them- selves. If you call 911, the police usually get there af- ter the crime is over. Over the last decades, most states liberalized their gun laws. More allow con- cealed carry. Gun control ad- vocates predicted that would lead to an epidemic of shoot- ings. The opposite happened. As concealed carry was legalized, violent crime went down. Especially tell- ing, crime dropped in each state right after the law was changed. Gottlieb says that's be- cause "an armed society is a polite society." As a reporter who at- tended only liberal schools and worked in liberal news- rooms, I'd been taught that more guns means more vio- lence. Even after interview- ing violent criminals in pris- on and hearing many say that what they feared most was "not the police" but that the person being robbed "might be armed," I still believed that more guns meant more crime. Only when I started re- searching gun crime and studying the data did it be- come clear that most of my anti-gun assumptions were wrong. More guns really does mean less crime. John Stossel is author of "Give Me a Break: How I Ex- posed Hucksters, Cheats, and Scam Artists and Became the Scourge of the Liberal Media." make one more stop, as a additional sol- dier had just come out of surgery. I knew I did not need to ask permission, knowing The Boss's intent. I led Rumsfeld back to the post-op room. The soldier had re- ceived eye surgery, and so he was ful- ly awake. He had a bandage around his head and over his eye, a small trickle of blood was running down his cheek like a tear. During their exchange, the young man took the time to energetically tell the secretary that he was doing the right thing, and that the troops understood their mission, and he should keep fight- ing for the freedom of the Iraqi people and the protection of American interests. In the car as we left, Rumsfeld looked at me and said, "I came here to encourage them, and he spent the entire time ex- horting me. Where do we find young peo- ple like this? " An often forgotten fact is that Time Magazine approached Rumsfeld, intent on naming him their Man of the Year in 2003. They were smart to ask first. The Boss said "no", and pushed them to name not one person, but "The American Sol- dier" instead. The cover remains an icon- ic image that honored the rank and file, not the high and mighty. The bottom line is this: Reasonable people can disagree about the policy choices made by the George W. Bush ad- ministration in general, and by Rumsfeld in particular, but this man, forever known to me as simply The Boss, was a man of integrity, character, leadership, and re- al grit. Time does not allow for a full obit here; I will leave that to others. The man I knew, the man who shepherded the American military through the 9/11 at- tacks, the man dubbed the American Sec- retary of War for his strength and ser- vice to our nation, will never be forgotten. He was the embodiment of the "Man in the Arena" to whom President Teddy Roosevelt referred in his famous remarks at the Sorbonne in 1910. He lived, fought, and passed with a quiet power that his critics cannot match. Rest in peace, Boss. It was an honor to serve beside you. This piece originally appeared in The Daily Signal. Let parents decide what their children will learn, and give parents the freedom to select a school for their child that teaches the worldview and the values that they want. Let parents take responsibil- ity for their children's future. It is the only way.
