As the days get longer and the temperature rises, reality TV watchers hunker down for what promises to be an exciting season of love and adventure. Viewers can watch all the drama unfold as a house full of handsome bachelors vie for the attention and affection of one lucky woman in the reality-dating series "The Bachelorette," airing Monday, June 17, on ABC. This season's bachelorette is the beautiful Desiree Hartsock, a bridal stylist and consultant from Northglenn, Colo., who grew up with very little material wealth. "We lived in an apartment where my brother's room was the living room," Hartsock says of her childhood in the premiere episode. "Not a lot of money, not a lot of nice things." Her new "Bachelorette" lifestyle must come as a bit of a shock to her, then. By the end of the first episode of the season, she had moved into a gorgeous cliff-side mansion in Malibu and was given a new powder-blue Bentley convertible by host Chris Harrison. They may have had very little growing up, but Hartsock gushes about how lucky she was to have such a great family. Her parents in particular were shining examples of love and devotion. A news release announcing Hartsock as this season's star stated that "more than anything, Desiree's ultimate dream is to find a love like the one her parents share. Married for 35 years, but together for 40, they've always supported and appreciated one another." Before she can realize that dream, however, she must find the right man. Her venue of choice? Reality television. "The Bachelorette" takes its format from its parent show, "The Bachelor." In "The Bachelorette," 25 eligible men move into a house in Malibu and spend time with the designated bachelorette (Hartsock). Each episode showcases the highlights — and lowlights — of these dates, and culminates in a rose ceremony. At the rose ceremony, the bachelorette hands out flowers to men she wishes to spend more time with; those left without a rose are eliminated and must leave the mansion. When all but two contestants have been eliminated, the bachelorette picks which one she wants to spend the rest of her life with, and a proposal generally follows. Actually, the show takes more than just its format from "The Bachelor." It takes its leading lady as well. Each season, a former contestant from "The Bachelor" is chosen to star in "The Bachelorette." Oliver Softs 750 ml. $5.99 Producers pick a woman who, though rejected, struck a chord with audiences. Though the purpose of these shows is to cultivate lasting love and marriages, the desired result has proven elusive for most past participants. Season 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 of "The Bachelorette" ended with proposals and engagements, but the final couples all broke up within a year of each season's finale, some among rumors of cheating and lies. Season 3 was unique in that the bachelorette rejected all of the men, and the show ended without a final couple. The odds of the bachelorette finding love may not be great, but they're not impossible. Season 7 ended with contestant J.P. Rosenbaum proposing to bachelorette Ashley Herbert. Unlike most other winners, Rosenbaum and Herbert's relationship stayed strong. The two were married in December 2012, and their wedding was broadcast on ABC. So far, so good for those two, but it's only been six months. Only time will tell if their relationship lasts. The one undeniable success story of "The Bachelorette" is that of Season 1. Trista Rehn, having been rejected by Alex Michel in the first season of "The Bachelor," was given another chance to find love on reality TV as the very first "Bachelorette." Finalist Ryan Sutter proposed during the season finale, and the two were married in December 2003. Chris Harrison hosts "The Bachelorette" wedding was broadcast on ABC in a special aptly named "Trista & Ryan's Wedding." Ten years later, the two are still together and very much in love, not to mention proud parents of two children. In an interview with "People" magazine, Rehn said: "We put everything else second to us being together and making a life. If something comes up that we think is a great opportunity, we talk about it. It's about setting your priorities and truly committing to each other. You take advantage of opportunities that come to you, but you don't let those take over." Will Desiree find love like Trista and Ashley? Or will she end up disappointed like all the rest? Only time will tell, and her journey will be broadcast for all to see on ABC.
