10 NORTH BAY WOMAN S P R I N G | S U M M E R 2 0 2 1 IN THIS ISSUE I t occurs to me that for the past few issues, I've started out with how bewildered I am about the current state of affairs — whether it's been about my health or current events or the articles includ- ed in the issue. While there's no doubt that I have those same feelings this time around, I am trying to realize that it's all just, well, life. Yes, simply part of life, as you can read in my article about my thoughts on the validity of work-life balance. Whether it's the daily dance of motherhood and career, the multiple effects from the pandemic, or simply what to have for lunch, and while it is all often complicated, it is all going to happen just as it should. It is our reaction, especially to the things we can't control, that helps us to navigate through and create our best lives. An absolutely shining example of a calm, empathetic, yet assertive, action-oriented individual creating her own remarkable life and helping others do the same is our cover subject, San Rafael Chamber of Commerce CEO Joanne Webster. As you read her story you will learn that she is a devoted daughter and mother, (the quotes from her daughters brought me a few tears,) and a successful champion for local businesses. It was a pleasure to be on the cover shoot with her as she effortlessly changed up her looks, chatted with local business owners, and fear- lessly jumped onto a lift to the under-construction top floor of a new downtown San Rafael hotel. It was also an honor for us to have her story written by a local business woman and former broadcaster Stephanie Kirby Plante. Her intimate knowledge of Webster as a former board chair, and personal writing style, will draw you in to the cover story. We've really tried to round out this issue with ex- ceptional articles like Krystalynn M. Schlagel's advice on traveling alone which may seem scary, yet when planned properly, can be very fulfilling. Laura Cas- telli provides tried and true tips for disaster preparedness. Having these essentials, which can come in handy even though you may not be in control, can bring some peace of mind. Bloom CEO Lenice Smith sheds light on the waste that fash- ionability causes yet shines a mega watt spotlight on how being fash- ionably "green" is not just the color of your favorite spring dress. Ten Questions with a DEI expert, self-care, beauty and fashion choices, and a few other surprises (thank you anchorwoman Pam Cook) complete this issue. Befitting of this special drop day, Mother's Day, I must pay tribute to my mom, Jan Berndt, who has taught me about living my best life. We do love to shop together, enjoy a few cocktails together, and we've even worked together; nevertheless it's truly about sharing stories, loving our families, always learning, and striving to be our truest self that is important. Thank you to our advisory board for sharing stories of their moms and motherhood with us as well. To all the moms, you are the best, you are doing your best, and you are all appreciated. Happy Mother's Day. Here's to being your best self! Enjoy this issue. Hugs, Clockwise from left: Love really is all around us!
